Autumn Term Learning

Week beginning 12.12.15
In English we will be writing our own set of instructions. We will also be creating our own book of instructions to go in our class book corner.

In maths we will continue to work on quick recall of multiplication facts for the 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables. 

In history we will be continuing our work on new and old toys. We will learning about toys from the past using a range of sources. We will be also comparing new and old toys and writing about this. 

Week beginning 7.12.15
In English we will be continuing our unit on instructions. We will be learning to punctuate different sentences correctly and planning our own set of instructions to guide people around 'Fairyland'. 

In maths we will be learning to revise times tables learned and derive division facts. We will also be learning to perform division with remainders. 

In history we are starting our topic on 'Toys'. Please remember to to bring in your favourite toy on Monday to describe and talk about. We will also be comparing new toys to toys from the past. 

Week beginning 30.11.15
In English we will be learning about instructions. We will be identifying the key features of instructions by comparing. We will also be reading the book 'Instructions' by Neil Gaiman that gives instructions of how to travel around a fantasy world. 

In maths we will be learning about measures of length and capacity. We will be measuring in cm, mm, l and ml. 

Week beginning 23.11.15
In English we will be starting a unit of work on instructions. We will also be learning the spelling rules when adding suffixes to words. 

In maths we will be learning how to making amounts of money using the correct notation (£ . and p). We will also be adding and subtracting amounts of money. 

In science we will be learning about magnets, magnetic and non-magnetic materials and carrying out lots of investigations. 

Week beginning 16.11.15
In English we will be planning and writing a diary for an animal of our choice. 

In maths we will be learning to find fractions of amounts and making amounts of money using the correct notation (£ . and p). 

In science we will be carrying out an investigation to find out what effect friction has on moving objects. 

Week beginning 9.11.15
In English we are continuing our work on recounts (diary). We will be identifying the layout and features of a diary entry. We will also be learning about past and present tense and writing sentences using adverbs and adverbial phrases. 

In maths we are learning to double and half two digit numbers. We will also be finding fractions of objects and amounts. 

In science we are starting a new unit of work on forces and magnets. This week we will be learning about pushes and pulls. 

Week beginning 2.11.15
In English we are starting a new unit of work on recounts as a diary entry. We will be reading ‘The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish’ by Neil Gaiman. We will be making predictions about the using role play. We will also be learning about verb tenses and how to use adverbs in sentences.

In Maths we are learning to compare, order and understand place value of 2- and 3-digit numbers, subtract from 2- and 3-digit numbers and round numbers to the nearest ten.
 
In art we will be creating our own bridge art work based on the work of Bobby Hill of Brooklyn Bridge, New York. 

Week beginning 19.10.15
In English we will be coming to the end of our poetry unit where we have been focussing on word play in poems. We will be reading the poem 'Fish in a Dish' and then writing our own tongue twister poems. On Friday, as part of Halloween day, we will be reading 'Ten Things in a Wizard's Pocket' then using the poem as a model to write our own. 

In maths we will be continuing to learn how to tell the time on analogue and digital clocks. On Friday, as part of Halloween day, the children will be challenged to solve lots of spooky maths problems!

In art we will be learning how to create texture using paint. We will also be creating our own art work based on the 'Japanese Bridge' by Claude Monet. 

Week beginning 12.10.15
In English we will continue to learn about language word play in poems. We will be identifying rhyme, alliteration and onomatopoeia. We will also be writing our own poem based on 'In The Land of The Flibbertigibbets' by John Foster.

In maths we will be learning about the relationship between days, months and years. We will also be learning how to tell the time.

On Tuesday it is our class trip to the Waterways museum at Goole. Please remember to bring your pack up and suitable footwear for the day. 

Week beginning 5.10.15
In English we will be starting a new poetry unit called 'Silly Stuff'. We will be exporing poetic language and using a poem as a model to write our own stanzas. 
It is also National Poetry Day on Thursday. This year the theme is 'Light'. We will be reading poems about light then writing our own poems based on personal experiences.

In maths we are learning about the properties of 3D shapes. 

Week beginning 28.9.15
In English this week we will be retelling the story 'The Tunnel' by Anthony Browne. We will also be learning about the different sentence types: statement, command, exclamation and question.

In maths we are learning to derive and recall the multiplication facts for the 4 and 8 times table. We will also be learning doubling and halving facts. 

In geography we will be learning how to use compasses.

Week beginning 21.9.15
In English this week we will be planning and writing our own stories based on 'Gorilla' by Anthony Browne. We will be using the main plot of the stories but we will be changing the characters and objects to create our own. We will be working on including interesting adjectives and conjunctions (because, when, if) in our writing.  

In maths we are learning to derive and recall multiplication and division facts for the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables. 

In geography we will continue our learning on rivers by focusing on deltas and estuaries. 

Week beginning 14.9.15
In English we will be continuing our unit about stories by the same author (Anthony Browne). We will be learning about antonyms (words that have an opposite meaning to each other e.g. happy/sad) and making our own worry dolls from the story 'Silly Billy' to explore the character's feelings. 

In maths we are learning to compare and order 2 and 3 digit numbers, count on and back in 10s and 1 and add and subtract two digit numbers.  

In geography we will be learning about the journey of a river and key vocabulary associated with rivers. 

Week beginning 7.9.15
In English we are starting a unit about stories by the same author. We will be reading books written by Anthony Browne. This week we will be reading and comparing texts; writing our own blurbs for a book and learning how to use different conjunctions in sentences. 

In maths we are learning to use multiple of 5 and 10 bonds to 100 to solve additions and subtractions and add and subtract 1-digit numbers to and from 2-digit numbers. 

In geography we will be using an atlas to locate and name the four countries in the UK and their capital cities. We will also be learning how a river is formed.
