Autumn Term Learning

Week Commencing 14.12.15
English:
The children will write their exciting legends for me this week! They will be encouraged to use powerful words in their description of setting, character and monsters and maybe even some similie. Some may even show me clauses and speech punctuation! I'm looking forward to my Christmas reading!

Maths:
We're continuing our work on angles, perimeter and shape this week. We'll be looking at lines of symmetry, other types of line (horizontal, perpendicular etc) and looking at how to solve perimeter challenges using our doubling skills.

Week Commencing 07.09.15
English:
This week children will start to draft their own legend having identified plot, character and setting. There will be further emphasis on expanded noun phrases, conjunctions, clauses and speech punctuation.

Maths:
We will start to look at properties of 2D shapes, perimeter and measuring angles. We will use angle finders to find right angles in our class room.


Week Commencing 30.11.15
English:
This week the children will be continuing to look at legends and the detailed descriptions of their characters. They will also recap the speech punctuation rules and start to look at clauses.

Maths:
The children will complete some extension work around division, including finding remainders and solving word problems.
After this, they will start to develop their learning of charts and graphs; how to put data into them and how to interpret them.


Week Commencing 23.11.15
English:
We are continuing with our classic narrative unit, looking at how films without narrative use music and camera angles to emphasise points in our stories. The children will use a film to get creative with their story writing language.
Maths:
This week we will be looking at division using; subtraction on a number line, counting in chunks and using our times table facts to help us.

Week Commencing 16.11.15
English:

We are starting a new unit looking at Classic Narratives, specifically legends. Children will discover the features of a legend and look in detail at how imaginative descriptions of characters add interest to the reader.
Maths:
We are starting to look at fractions this week, including finding equivalent fractions and adding fractions together.

Week Commencing 09.11.15
English:
We will finish our unit on writing recounts this week. The children will recall the features of a recount (5W’s, paragraphs, descriptive language, time adverbials and past tense verbs) and use them to complete recounts of well-known fairy tales.
 
Maths:
The children will complete their current unit on multiplication by starting to use a multiplication grid to complete calculations using 2 digit x 1 digit numbers, progressing to 2digit x 2digit with numbers up to 50.


Week commencing 02.11.15
English:
This week we are starting work on recounts, looking how to structure them and effective language to use within them.

Maths:
We are going to do lots of practice on our times tables this week including using multiplication facts to solve division problems, identifying numbers that fit into more than one times table and using doubling of the 4x table to solve 8x tables questions.


Week Commencing 19.10.15
English:
We are going to do some final polishing to our adjective and speech mark using skills before planning and writing a spooky Halloween write!

Maths:
This week we are looking at measurements to do with time and using skills to include: Telling the time to the nearest minute on analogue and digital clocks (minutes past and minutes to); timing events in minutes and seconds; finding a time after a given interval (not crossing the hour); calculating time intervals and solving word problems involving time.

Week Commencing 12.10.15
English:
We are going to use our detective skills to locate information in our selected text, whether it's what's inferred, written or regarding our personal opinions. We are also going to further practise our punctuating speech skills after aural rehearsal of conversations.

Maths:
The children are going to further practise their written subtraction skills whilst also using rounding and estimating. We will also be looking at using inverse operations to check our answers. After this, we will progress to selecting the right calculation to solve word problems.


Week commencing 05.10.15

English:
We are coming to the conclusion of our study of the setting in Storm. This week we will continue to explore the emotions of our characters and find out what happens to Annie when she rides out into the storm with a stranger!
Also this week we have 'No pens Wednesday' so we will be looking at drama using pictures of settings for a stimulus. Thursday is National Poetry Day and so we will be getting creative in the classroom to share our word choices to finally create a poem about light.

Maths:
Children will be progressing from counting forwards to solve subtraction to using an expanded form column subtraction including exchanging, with some progressing to standard column subtraction.

Week commencing 28.09.15
English:
We are continuing to explore our new story Storm. We will be looking at our main character's feelings, recapping the story so far, hot seating characters and making predictions as to what may happen next.

Maths:
We are starting to look at subtraction this week with a view to progressing to column subtraction. Children will be practicing and applying their number bonds to 10 to help them in their subtraction calculations.

Week commencing 21.09.15
English:
We are starting a new topic that focusses on settings for stories, including stories from other cultures. We will be starting to get to grips with our text, Storm, which is a ghost story. Children will start to look at punctuating direct speech this week as well as starting to write increasingly descriptive sentences for their stories.

Maths:
After practicing our rounding and estimating skills last week as well as starting expanded addition, we are progressing to look at column addition of 3 or 4 digit numbers, including carrying.


Week commencing 14.09.15

English:
This week we will be continuing to study poems for performance, specifically Roger McGough and comparing his work to Christina Rossetti.  By the end of this week, all children will have performed in front of their classmates as part of a group.

Maths:
We are starting to look at addition this week after a recap of rounding and estimating as a method of checking our answers. We will start with some mental addition practice and will progress to standard columnar addition.


Week commencing 07.09.15

English: We will be starting the first two weeks of autumn 2015/16 looking at performance poetry from Roger McGough and Christina Rossetti, eventually creating our own poems to perform.

Maths: The class will start the year working on place value of 3 digit numbers for year 3’s and 4 digit for year 4’s. The learning will be put into practice with a number of fun, practical activities.
