Autumn term learning

Week beginning 15th December
The final week before we finish for a well deserved Christmas break.
English - we will be reading the story of Baboushka and then sequencing events from the story.  We are going to be making Russian dolls too.  We are also going to be describing Santa's grotto.
Maths - we will be doing lots of Christmassy problem solving.
In the afternoons - we will be making our calendars.

Week beginning 8th December
What a busy week this is going to be!
English - we will be making Christingles, drawing picture maps to sequence the steps and then writing the instructions for how to make one.  We will then be reading Harvey Slumfenburger's Christmas Present by John Burningham and then write descriptive poems about Father Christmas.
Maths - we will be looking at days of the week and months of the year.

Wednesday is our dress rehearsal for our concert and then we perform it for parents and grandparents.
On Thursday morning we will be performing our concert again.
Friday is Christmas dinner day.

Week beginning 1st December
English - we will be revisiting instructions this week.  We will be learning how to play musical statues and make paper snowflakes.  We will draw picture maps to sequence the steps and then write the instructions.
Maths - we will be looking at position and direction.  We will be using lots of positional language to describe where things are and we will be using the beebots for our work on direction.
In the afternoons - we will be having a final push to get our concert ready for our performances next week.

Week beginning 24th November
English - we will be learning how to use a capital letter for the personal pronoun I.  We will be reading Where's My Teddy? by Jez Alborough and then write our own story about losing something special.
Maths - we will be adding 1, 2 and 3 by counting on; subtracting 1, 2, 3 or more by counting back and we will be beginning to add three small numbers by spotting bonds to 10 or doubles (1-6).
In the afternoons - we will be continuing our Brrr! topic and we will be getting busy rehearsing our concert.


Week beginning 17th November
English - we will be finishing our work on instructions by writing our own book.
Maths - we will be revisiting number bonds.  We will be finding pairs of numbers to total 10.  We will be using addition facts to help us with subtraction and then use this to help solve simple problems.
In the afternoons - we will be starting our 'Brrr!' topic by locating the Arctic and Antarctic on maps and globes.  We will continue this theme in our Inspire afternoon by making penguins and polar bears.

Help your child this week by:
- talking about the Arctic and Antarctic
- writing simple instructions
- using addition and subtraction in 'real life'


Week beginning 10th November
English - we will be starting a new unit of work about instructions.  We will be reading a story called Open Very Carefully.  We will be giving and following verbal instructions, writing instructions and looking at using full stops and exclamation marks to punctuate our sentences.
Maths - we will be understanding and making teen numbers (10 and some 1s)  We will be comparing and ordering numbers to 20, then 30 and finding the number between two numbers with a difference of 2.
In the afternoons - we will be finishing our work about World War 1 by reading a story called The Donkey Of Gallipoli.  We will look at how important animals were during the war.

Help your child this week by:
- attending the phonics morning on Monday morning
- spotting 'teens' numbers in the environment 
- looking at how instructions are used in 'real' life


Week beginning 3rd November
English - we will be finishing our senses poetry work by reading and writing poems about Bonfire Night.
Maths - we will be looking at length.  We will be comparing objects to find the longest and the shortest.  We will also be measuring objects using non-standard units like cubes and paperclips and learning to use a ruler to measure using centimetres (cm).
In the afternoons - we will be continuing our work about World War 1.

Help your child this week by:
- discussing firework safety
- measuring objects around the house
- ordering different objects from the longest to the shortest


Week beginning 20th October
English - we will be continuing our senses poetry work.  We will be using autumn as our stimulus for collecting describing words and writing autumn senses poems.
Maths - we will be investigating shape.  We will be naming 2d shapes and using these to make pictures and repeating patterns.  We will also be sorting shapes into Venn and Carroll diagrams.
In the afternoons - we will be starting our work about World War 1.  We will be looking at the significance of poppies.

Remember that Friday is Halloween dress up day.  We will be doing lots of spooky activities throughout the day!

Help your child this week by:
- naming 2d shapes around the house
- describing autumn leaves
- continuing to read with them at least 3 times


Week beginning 13th October
English - we will be starting our poetry unit called Sensational Senses.  We will be using our senses to explore the wind and worms.  We will be collecting words to describe both of these things and then using the words to create wonderful poems.
Maths - we will be continuing our work on addition.  We will be looking at how to combine two groups to find a total and we will be learning how to add 1 and 2 to a number on a number track.
Afternoon work - we will be finishing our look at the changing seasons by exploring how trees change.

Help your child this week by:
- adding groups of objects together
- reading stories with familiar settings
- talking about how the trees are changing


Week beginning 6th October
English - we will be continuing our work about stories with familiar settings.  We will be using The Tiger Who Came To Tea this week.  We will be reading and enjoying the story, writing invitations and wanted posters.  
Maths - we will be looking at addition this week.  We will be looking investigating pairs of numbers with totals up to 10, recording number sentences using + and = signs and adding groups of objects to find totals.
In the afternoons - we will be continuing our work about the changing seasons.

Help your child this week by:
- writing invitations
- adding objects together to find a total
- talking about the weather, maybe keep a weather diary for the week


Week beginning 29th September
English - we will be starting a new unit of work about stories with familiar settings.  We will be reading This Is The Bear and Dogger.  We will be talking about our favourite toys and we will be writing 'lost' posters.  Thursday is National Poetry Day where we will be writing poems about our favourite things.
Maths - we will be doing lots of sorting this week.  We will be using our own criteria for sorting different objects.
In the afternoons - we will be starting our work about seasonal changes.  We will be recording the weather and looking at the difference between summer and winter.

Help your child this week by:
- reading stories about toys
- sorting objects into different groups and talking about how they have been sorted
- going on a walk and talking about the changes to the trees now that autumn is here

Week beginning 22nd September

English - we will be using The Little Red Hen to start learning about telling stories.  We will be using actions to tell the story, acting it out and drawing story maps.  We will also be baking bread.
Maths - we will be finishing our work on number by consolidating our learning about teens numbers, comparing numbers and finding one more and one less than any given number.
In the afternoons - we will be writing captions about our photographs and looking at how we can keep ourselves healthy.

Help you child this week by:
- encouraging them to tell you a familiar story
- continuing to recognise teens numbers
- talking about and naming different fruit and vegetables


Week beginning 15th September
English - we will be looking at writing captions this week.  We will be writing sentences to match pictures and we will be writing captions about Percy the park keeper.
Maths - we will be continuing to look at number this week.  We will be looking at 'teens' numbers.
In the afternoons - we will be looking at our baby photographs and matching adult and young animals.


Help your child this week by:
- looking out for teens numbers in the environment
- writing a sentence to match a picture
- talking about the names of baby animals, for example, cow and calf

Week Beginning 8th September
English - we will be learning all about labels and lists.  We will be labelling lots of pictures and making lists, including shopping lists.
Maths - we will be learning about numbers this week.  We will be counting and ordering.
In the afternoons - we will be looking at how we change as we grow.

Help your child this week by:
- looking out for numbers in the environment
- writing a shopping list
- looking through family photographs and discussing the changes
