Autumn term learning

Week beginning 16th December

Literacy - We will be reading and retelling the story of Baboushka.  We will be planning and writing our own version of the story.  We will also be making our own set of Russian dolls.

Numeracy - We are working on finding all possibility problems.  We will be designing outfits for elves and decorating Christmas trees.

Science - We are having a big science focus this week.  We will be looking at natural and man-made materials, investigating how the shape of materials can be changed by applying a force and exploring the changes made by heating and cooling materials.

It is our party on Tuesday afternoon.  Can I please remind you to send party clothes in a bag and we would greatly receive any donations of party food - boys to bring savoury snacks and girls to bring sweet treats!  Thank you.

Week beginning 9th December

Literacy - We will be continuing our work on non-fiction.  We will be looking again at alphabetical order and dictionaries and will be writing a glossary for Christmas words.

Numeracy - We are working on lots of different things this week.  We are looking at odd and even numbers, doubling numbers and reading numbers to 100 and beyond.

Christmas concert week is upon us! Dress rehearsal on Tuesday morning and the performances on Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday evening.

In the afternoons we will be busy putting the final touches to the concert and making party hats ready for Christmas dinner on Friday.

Week beginning 2nd December

Literacy - We will be working on information books.  We will be looking at the differences between fiction and non-fiction books, ordering things alphabetically and brushing up on our dictionary skills.

Numeracy - We are working on position and direction.  We will be learning lots of directional vocabulary and using this to give and follow instructions. We will also be describing the position of objects in a grid. 

In the afternoons we will be busy treading the boards to rehearse our concert 'A Little Bird Told Me' along with our usual guided reading sessions.


Week beginning 25th November

Literacy - We will be finishing our unit about Julia Donaldson stories by planning and writing our own version of The Smartest Giant In Town.  We will be using story mountains to plan our own stories and then we will write them.

Numeracy - We are working on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and looking at repeated addition as multiplication.

In the afternoons we will be finishing our Great Fire of London work and doing some work about road safety. We will be learning how to cross the road safely and designing posters to help get the safety message across.

Week beginning 18th November

Literacy - We will be continuing our work about Julia Donaldson stories.  Our story for this week is 'The Smartest Giant In Town'.  We will be acting out the story, producing story maps and retelling the story.  We will also be using it as a stimulus for our dance work in PE.

Numeracy - We are focussing on time.  We will be revising days and months and then moving on to telling the time to o'clock and half past.

In the afternoons we will be continuing our work about the Great Fire of London.  We are going to focus on the sequence of events and looking at the after effects of the fire.

Thursday is Christmas Art Day.  We will be producing beautiful things for our hoop, making Christmas cards and lots of other lovely festive activities.

Week beginning 11th November

Literacy - We will be starting a new unit of work about stories by the same author.  We will be focussing on the books by Julia Donaldson.  This week we will be reading lots of her stories and saying what we like about them.  We will also be writing book reviews and character descriptions.
If you have got any stories by Julia Donaldson at home, bring them in and we can share them.

Numeracy - We are focussing on money.  We will be recognising coins and making different amount with them.

In the afternoons we will be starting our work about the Great Fire of London.

Week beginning 4th November

Literacy - We will be using our senses to write poems about Bonfire Night.  I hope they are as good (if not better) than last week's leaf poems.
Numeracy - We are focussing on doubling and halving numbers.
In the afternoons we will be creating Autumn collages.

On Monday morning we will be taking part in the Sublime Science workshop.  Very exciting!


Week beginning 28th October

Literacy - We will be exploring our senses to write poems about the beauty of Autumn.
Numeracy - We are focussing on data handling. We will be sorting lots of different objects in lots of different ways.
In the afternoons we will be designing and making our model village.

Week beginning 14th October

Literacy - We are going to be looking at instructions, in particular recipes.  We will start by identifying 'bossy' verbs in recipes.  We will then be making pumpkin soup, sequencing photographs and writing a recipe for making the soup.
Numeracy - We are focussing on number facts.  We will be finding pairs of numbers that total ten and then extend our learning to 20 and then 100.
In the afternoons we will be taking inspiration from our front doors to produce some clay relief tiles and create some prints of our door.

Week beginning 7th October

Literacy - We are going to be reading and writing more poems about the things we love and the things we hate.  We will also be writing an adventure poem to enter into a poetry competition.
Numeracy - We are going to be looking at shape.  We will be investigating 2d and 3d shape.
As part of our Geography work we will be going on a walk round Crowle on Tuesday morning to have look at the local areas and buildings. In the afternoons, we will then be planning our route to school and thinking about the buildings and the features in Crowle.


Remember we are taking part in 'No Pens Wednesday' this week. All day we will be putting our pens and pencils down and focusing on speaking and listening in our lessons. It will be a really fun and practical day!


Week beginning 30th September

Literacy - We are going to be reading and writing poems about worms!
Numeracy - We are going to be looking at length.  We will be measuring things using non standard units and then move on to using rulers.
Afternoon work - We are beginning to look at where we live.  We will be looking at our houses so please remember to bring in your photos, please.


Week beginning 23rd September

Literacy - We are going to be planning and writing a new adventure for Harry and his dinosaurs.
Numeracy - We are going to be looking at finding 1 more and less and 10 more and less than a number and then moving onto addition.
Afternoon work - We will be finishing our science work on ourselves by looking at how we and other animals move and investigating our joints.
