Autumn term learning

Week beginning 14th December
English - we will be doing lots of work based on the story of Baboushka.

Maths - we will be doing some Christmas problem solving.

In the afternoons - it is our party on Tuesday afternoon.  We will also be finishing our cards and calendars and lots of other Christmassy activities.


Week beginning 7th December
English - we will be reading 'Where's My Teddy?' by Jez Alborough and then we will be planning and writing our own stories about losing something.

Maths - we will be continuing our work about money.  We will be working out different amounts using different coins.

In the afternoons - we will be finishing our work about toys.

It is our concert this week and on Friday we will be enjoying our Christmas lunch with our families and friends. 


Week beginning 30th November
English - we will be reading 'Aaarrrggghhh, Spider!' by Lydia Monks this week.  We will be hot seating the characters and making predictions about how they might react.  We will then be thinking about all 3 stories we have read over the past few weeks and we will be writing book reviews about our favourite.

Maths - we will be working on money this week.  We will be recognising coins and knowing values up to £2.

In the afternoons we will be busy rehearsing for our Christmas concert.


Week beginning 23rd November
English - we will be continuing our work about stories with a familiar setting.  We will be retelling Class Two At The Zoo for our 'cold' writing task then we will be reading a new story called Who Is Our New Teacher?  We will be thinking of our own ideas for a new teacher and writing questions to ask the dragon.  
 

Maths - we will be looking at addition and subtraction this week.  We will be learning how to add and subtract small numbers by counting on and back and then we will be adding 3 small numbers by looking for pairs of numbers that total 10.
 

In the afternoons - we will be continuing our history work by looking at the similarities and differences between toys from the past and toys today.
 
Thursday is going to be a very busy and fun day with Christmas art activities in the morning and our inspire afternoon.  We are looking forward to playing games together then making our own.

Week beginning 16th November
English - we will be starting a new unit of work about stories with familiar settings.  Our story for this week will be Class Two At The Zoo by Julia Jarman.  We will be making predictions and linking what we read and hear to our own experiences.  We will be drawing story maps to help us retell the story and at the end of the week we will be composing and writing sentences.
 
Maths - we will be looking at positional vocabulary and length this week.  We will be using lots of different vocabulary to describe the position of object and then we will be ordering and comparing lengths, using non-standard units to measure objects and we will also be learning how to use a ruler to measure in cm.
           
In the afternoons - we will be starting our history work about toys.  We will be talking about our favourite toys and we will be writing questions to ask a visitor about their favourite toys.
 
It is also anti-bullying week this week and we will be doing lots of work around this too.

Week beginning 9th November
English - we will be continuing our work about instructions.  We will be looking closely at the features of instructions and then we will be making pizzas and writing the instructions for how to make them.
 
Maths - we will be looking at number bonds this week.  We will be finding addition and subtraction pairs for 6, 7 and 10 and then we will be using this knowledge to solve simple word problems.
 
In the afternoons - we will be designing, making and evaluating bridges.
 
 
Week beginning 2nd November
English - we will be starting a new unit of work about instructions.  We will be carving pumpkins and then we will be learning how to write instructions to tell someone else how to do it.
 
 
Maths - we will be continuing with our look at number.  We will be exploring teens numbers and looking at the place value of numbers to 100 and identifying tens and ones.
 
In the afternoons - we will be investigating ways of joining materials together.
  
Week beginning 19th October
English - we will be continuing our work about sense poems this week.  We will be using our senses to describe autumn.  We will be collecting ideas about autumn so we can write our own poems.  They should be fantastic if our wind poems are anything to go by!
 
Maths - we will be continuing our work on number.  We will be estimating and counting, looking at teens numbers and ordinal numbers.
 
In the afternoons - we will be finishing our geography work this week by looking at the journey of a river.
 
Week beginning 12th October
English - we are beginning our work on senses poems.  We will be reading poems about the wind and then we will be collecting ideas about the wind so we can write our own poems.
 
Maths - we are having another number focus this week.  We will be reading number words, practicing our number formation and estimating and counting different groups of objects.
 
In the afternoons - we will be following up our trip by looking at maps of our local area and identifying the rivers and bridges we visited.  We will also be drawing maps of our journey to school and a journey to Scunthorpe.
 

Week beginning 5th October
English - we will be reading a story called 'The Day the Crayons Quit' by Drew Daywalt. We will be writing letters from the crayons explaining their feelings to Duncan, creating storyboards showing what the crayons did after they had quit and then we will be writing poems about colours.
 
Maths - we will be focussing on shape this week.  We will be naming and identifying shapes, making pictures and patterns and describing the properties of shapes.
 
In the afternoons  we will be starting our work about rivers and bridges.  This work will be reinforced on our magical mystery tour on Thursday when we go and look at rivers and bridges near us.
 
Week beginning 28th September
English - we will be continuing our work on The 3 Billy Goats Gruff.  We will be acting out the story in small groups and then we will be retelling the story in our own words.  We will then go on to look at the characters in more detail.  We will be writing character descriptions and WANTED posters.
 
Maths - we will be looking at doubling numbers to 5 + 5 and beginning to look at subtraction. We will be learning how to use the - and = symbols in our number sentences.
 
In the afternoons - we will be continuing our look at magnets.  We will be carrying out investigations to find the strongest magnets.  In computing we will be using ipads to take photographs and record videos.
 

Help your child this week by:
- discussing the characters in traditional tales
- practising doubling numbers
- taking photographs using cameras and ipads.

Week beginning 21st September
English - we are starting our work about traditional tales this week.  We will be reading and enjoying lots of different stories and talking about our favourites.  We will be having a big focus on The 3 Billy Goats Gruff.  We will be learning how to tell the story using actions and making story maps.
 
Maths - we are starting our look at addition.  We will be looking for pairs of numbers that make totals of 5, 6 and 10 and we will be learning how to add small numbers to a larger number by counting on.  We will also be learning how to write addition number sentences using the + and = symbols.
 
In the afternoons - we will be looking at magnets.  We will be investigating which things are magnetic and non-magnetic and we will be learning about the words 'attract' and 'repel'.
 

Help your child this week by:
- reading a range of traditional tales like Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk ...
- practising adding sets of objects together
- investigating things that are magnetic around the home

Week beginning 14th September
English - we will be continuing our work on labels, lists and signs.  We will be reading a book called 'Billy's Bucket'.  We will be writing lists of things that are in the bucket and then writing our own sentences about what is in our bucket.  We will be making sure we use capital letters and full stops and leave spaces between our words.
 
Maths - we will be continuing our work about numbers.  We will be looking at 1 more and 1 less and then having a big focus on teens numbers.  We will be continuing to focus on forming our numbers correctly.
 
In the afternoons - we will be continuing our work on floating and sinking by designing and making our own tin foil boats and then investigating which ones float.
 
Help your child this week by:
- using your imaginations and seeing what could be under the water in the bath
- practising writing numbers
- exploring things that float in the bath.
 
Week beginning 7th September
English - we will be starting our work on labels, lists and captions.  We will be reading a book called 'Not A Stick' and then using our imaginations to think of lots of uses for a stick.  We will be writing lists and sentences about our ideas.
 
 
 
Maths - we will be doing lots of work about number this week.  We will be counting, ordering, estimating and having a big focus on number formation.
 
 
 
In the afternoons - we will be starting our science work by looking at floating and sinking.
