In the Autumn term we learnt...

Week commencing 16th December, 2013

This week we are counting down to Christmas! We will be reading 'The Night Before Christmas' and labelling a Christmas picture. We will be practising number formation and number correspondance with Christmas baubles.

We are learning a Christmas alphabet song and will be writing the word Christmas in our best cursive formation. In phonics we are revising the letter sounds oi, ng, sh, qu and ie/igh.

Our creative activities include making snowy pictures using flour and glitter and decorating Christmas trees using lots of different materials.

On Monday it is our Christmas Party afternoon and we are looking forward to playing party games and dancing with our friends.

Show and tell this week is a small toy.

Week commencing 9th December, 2013     

This week we are performing our Christmas Concert, 'A Little Bird Told Me'. We are very excited. On Tuesday morning we are having our dress rehearsal and we can't wait to wear our costumes.

On Monday we will be writing Christmas lists and making magical reindeer dust. On Tuesday after our dress rehearsal we will be making party hats for Christmas dinner day on Friday. In Wednesday's PE session we are exploring balance using bean bags and practising catching in pairs. In the afternoon it is our Christmas Concert. On Thursday we are learning the names of 3d shapes (spheres, cubes, cuboids, pyramids and cones) through Christmas presents and discussing real objects that are these shapes e.g. a sphere shaped present could be a football. In the afternoon we have handwriting practise using 'The magic pencil'. On Friday we are improving our memory skills by playing matching pairs on the Ipads. Who will be our class champion and complete the matching pairs game the fastest?

In ICT we will be completing our Christmas calendars and playing Christmas games. Show and tell this week is a Christmas object.
 

In phonics we are revising phonemes ou, th, ch, oa and ar. We will also be singing alphabet songs to learn the letter names and practising blending (sounding out words for reading) and segmenting (chopping up words into sounds for writing). 


Week commencing 2nd December, 2013

This week we will be exploring advent and The Christmas Story. We will be ordering the numbers on an advent calendar, counting backwards and working out less/ fewer.

We will be writing about how we made the Christmas cakes last week and writing in Christmas cards. We will be writing Christmas letters and making cards in our Christmas Post-office role play area and practising our cursive handwriting using whiteboards.

We will be exploring ice and melting through free play opportunities.

On Thursday it is our phonics workshop morning and we hope that you can join us.

We will be painting and colouring characters from the nativity and role-playing the story in our Nativity role-play area. We may also enjoy making toys in Santa's workshop this week.

In phonics we are learning the phonemes ur, ow and oi. We will also be singing alphabet songs to learn the letter names and practising blending (sounding out words for reading) and segmenting (chopping up words into sounds for writing). Our tricky word this week is you.

Week commencing 25th November, 2013

This week we will be busy writing ingredients lists for Christmas cakes and making Christmas cakes. We also have a Christmas cake number correspondance activity where we will be adding currents to a Christmas cake.
 
 
On Wednesday we are all dressing in bright clothing for our Road Safety awareness day and we have lots of fun activities to help us keep safe near roads.

Thursday is our inspire afternoon and we hope you can join us to make rockets. Don't forget to bring lots of interesting materials to use!

We continue our Winter theme this week by making snowprint pictures, glittery snowflakes and cotton wool snowmen. We will also be making bright stars for our nativity display.
 

We will also be practicing our singing and dancing for the Christmas performance and learning lots of new Christmas songs. Our memory game this week is Kim's game with Christmas objects.

In phonics we are learning the phonemes oo, ar and or. We will also be singing alphabet songs to learn the letter names and practising blending (sounding out words for reading) and segmenting (chopping up words into sounds for writing). Our tricky words this week are no and go.

Week commencing 18th November, 2013

This week is anti-bullying week. We will be reading an e-book about bullying called Digiduck's Big Decision and discussing the unkind events in the story. We will be doing a piece of writing about the story using our best cursive script. In circle time we will be learning about compliments, giving compliments to each other and experiencing how receiving one can make us feel.
 

We will be writing invites to our inspire afternoon which is taking place on Thursday 28th November. In maths we are ordering numbers and solving more addition and subtraction number problems.  We are learning to recognise the addition and subtraction signs + and - and how to read and write number sentences.
 

We will begin exploring the Winter season this week by looking at photos of winter scenes and discussing ways to keep warm. We will be making a textile collage of hats, mittens and a scarf.

Thursday is Christmas Art Day and we will be spending all day making Christmas crafts for home and school. Our physical development this week is focused on dancing and we will be creating dance movements for Stars, Birds and Sheep. In science we are exploring materials and testing which material would be best to mend a broken umbrella. We will also be making shape patterns on a computer artwork package.
 

In phonics we are learning the phonemes ai, ee, ie/igh and oa. We will also be singing alphabet songs to learn the letter names and practising blending (sounding out words for reading) and segmenting (chopping up words into sounds for writing). Our tricky words this week are was and my.

Week commencing 11th November, 2013

This week we are learning about the Romans. We will be finding out facts about Romans, writing about Roman soldiers, exploring past and present by comparing Roman clothes and objects with our own, making mini-mosaics, designing a shield using repeating shape patterns and marching like Roman soldiers in PE. We will also be travelling under and over the small apparatus.
 

In maths we are continuing our work on addition and subtraction. We will be learning how to use number tracks to help us solve addition and subtraction problems. We will be using lots of mathematical language.
 

In phonics we are learning the phonemes ch, th, sh and ng. We will also be singing an alphabet song and practising blending (sounding out words for reading) and segmenting (chopping up words into sounds for writing). Our tricky words this week are we, be and me.

Show and tell this week is a picture using a square, rectangle and a circle.

Week commencing 4th November, 2013


We are starting this week preparing for bonfire night, writing bonfire poems and learning how to stay safe at a bonfire and firework display. We will be painting bonfire pictures and making sparkly fireworks using glue and glitter. We will also be exploring taking away using firework rockets and using the language of subtraction.
 

On Monday we have visitors in school called Sublime Science and we will be taking part in a science workshop. On Tuesday we are having our own bonfire party with hot-dogs and we will be singing bonfire songs. On Thursday we are making our own rockets using lots of different materials. Please remember to bring a tube or a carton in for this activity.
 

We will also be playing matching pairs, practising pencil control on bonfire themed pictures and cursive letter formation.

In phonics we are learning new sounds 'y' and 'z'. We will also be singing an alphabet song and practising blending (sounding out words for reading) and segmenting (chopping up words into sounds for writing). Our tricky words this week are he and she. We are also learning how to read and write words with two syllables.

Week commencing 28th October, 2013 

This week will be spooky as we get busy with lots of Halloween activities. We will be sharing the stories 'Pumpkin Soup' by Helen Cooper,  'Aaaarrgghh! Spider' by Lydia Monks, 'Room on a Broom' by Julia Donaldson and Winnie the Witch books by Valerie Thomas.

We will be reading Halloween poetry 'The Witches Cauldron' by William Shakespeare and singing 'The Witches Brew' by Hap Palmer. We will also be looking at skeleton movements in PE and making up a skeleton dance after reading 'Funny Bones' by Janet and Allan Ahlberg.
 

On  Monday we will be writing witches potions on cauldrons and making a Pumpkin shape face using 2d shapes that we know and other shapes like ovals, hexagons and pentagons for the features. On Tuesday we are learning how to add two groups of objects together using spooky Halloween objects.

Thursday is Halloween dress up day and there will be lots of Halloween activities throughout the day: Pumpkin carving, pumpkin face biscuits, balloon spiders, witches hats, making slime, writing spells and making potions in the witches den and many more!

We will also be singing Halloween songs, ordering pumpkin numbers, making a skeleton picture using chalk and glitter and a creepy bone collage picture using lots of different materials. We will drawing spiders on the laptops.
 

In phonics we are learning new sounds 'j', 'v', 'w' and 'x'. We will also be learning an alphabet song and practising blending (sounding out words for reading) and segmenting (chopping up words into sounds for writing). Our tricky words this week are no go I the to.

Week commencing 14th October, 2013

This week we are down on the farm! We will be reading lots of farm stories and retelling and sequencing the story 'Good Fun Farm' by Ian Whybrow. We will also be making tractor pictures from 2d shapes, writing animal words from our imaginative journey to a farm on our story bus. Our maths focus this week is counting in 1s, 2s and 10s. We will be doing lots of counting backwards too.
 
 
In PE we are practising moving like different animals on the farm and jumping like frogs into hoops.

We are also doing lots of hard work on letter formation and writing our names independently and decorating them in an Autumn theme.

In phonics we will be blending words for reading and segmenting words for writing and learning how to read the tricky words - I, no and go.

Show and tell this week is a dry leaf or a dry leaf picture.
 

Week commencing 7th October, 2013

This week we are continuing our Autumn and Harvest theme. We will be sharing stories about scarecrows, 'The Scarecrow's Hat' by Ken Brown and 'The Scarecrow Who Didn't Scare' by Neil Griffiths.
 

We will be writing sentences about scarecrows, painting pictures of scarecrows, making scarecrow puppets and making real miniature scarecrows using lots of different materials.

We will be exploring Autumn on an Autumn walk and collecting leaves for leaf print pictures and to use in scarecrow making. We will be looking at conkers and where they come from and using them to practise counting in ones and tens. On Friday we are making hay bale scarecrow snacks.

On Thursday it is our Harvest Festival and we are looking forward to performing our Harvest songs.
 
In phonics we are learning new phoemes - r, h, b, f and l and we will be practising blending words for reading and segmenting words for writing and learning how to read the tricky words - I, no and go.

Week commencing 30th September, 2013

This week we are exploring Autumn and how the environment changes. We will be looking at pictures of Autumn, reading poems and singing songs about the changes Autumn brings to our world. We will also be moving like autumn leaves in the breeze and completing an Autumn leaf ordering numerals threading activity.

We will be discussing the meaning of Harvest and looking at the work of the combine harvester. We will be exploring freshly dug vegetables that are harvested this season and discussing how eating these can help us lead healthy lifestyles. We will make and taste vegetable soup and draw still-life vegetables using pastels on coloured paper.

Throughout the week we will be singing harvest songs and making owl hats for the Harvest Festival.

Writing activities will include name writing, completing pencil control worksheets, practising writing the cursive letters s, a, t, p, i, n. We will also begin to write independently simple words containing the letter sounds (phonemes) we have already learnt e.g. cat, mat, tip, pin.

In phonics we are learning more letter sounds (phonemes) ck, e, u and r and we are learning to blend sounds in simple words for reading and to segment sounds in simple words for writing e.g. c-a-t blends into the word cat and the word cat segments into c-a-t. This week we are also practising reading and writing simple captions and learning how to read the tricky words 'the', 'to' and 'and'.

Week commencing 23rd September, 2013

This week our class shared reading story is The Billy Goats Gruff and the children will enjoy joining in with the story, sometimes using musical instruments and role-playing the story.

The children will be using comparative language and ordering different sizes of goats. They will also be using goat toys to understand the concept the concept of more and less/ fewer. We will begin to look at number formation.

In PE we will continue our focus on moving in different ways but we will also be exploring over and under using small apparatus.

We will be making troll and goat puppets in the workshop to use in role-playing and retelling the story during free choice sessions.

In phonics we are learning more letter sounds (phonemes) g, o, ck and we are learning to blend sounds in simple words for reading and to segment sounds in simple words for writing e.g. c-a-t blends into the word cat and the word cat segments into c-a-t.

On Thursday it is European Languages day and we will be enjoying a French breakfast of croissants and chocolate millk. We will then undertake lots of langage activities: learning to say the number names to 10 in French, singing French songs, spreading butter and jam onto a baguette, playing boules, making European flags and French dancing.

For Friday's show and tell the children can bring in a favourite small toy.
