Spring Term 1 Learning

Week beginning 8.2.16
In English this week we will continue our fantasy writing. We will focus on writing expanded noun phrases, similes and suffix spelling patterns.
In maths we will be doubling and halving. With larger numbers we will partition our numbers before we double them.
WE WILL BE DOING SOME MOCK TESTS THIS WEEK IN READING, MATHS REASONING, ARTHMETIC, SPELLING AND GRAMMAR.
In the afternoons we will be having a science focus naming materials and describing the properties of these. We will then look at the differences between solids, liquids and gasses, changing states and reversible and irreversible changes.
Ways to support your child at home this week
  • Read with them at least three times a week.
  • Help them to recall their 3's times tables.
  • Help you child to learn their weekly spellings and some from the common exception word lists found in their home school books.
  • Work on the instant recall of doubling numbers to 10.
  • Play the maths, spelling and SPAG games allocated to them on their active learn page.


Week Commencing 2.2.16
In English this week we will continue our unit of work on fantasy stories. We will be reading different texts and retrieving information from the text. We will also be using expanded noun phrases to describe different dragons. Our spelling work will focus on suffixes and plural endings.
In maths we will be rounding to the nearest 10 and then 100. Continue to work on our 2s,3s,5s, and 10 times tables and be estimating amounts of objects.
During our creative curriculum work we will be focusing on producing artwork related to our ancient Egypt topic. We will learn how to print using polystyrene tiles, use tints and tones to produce a colour wash and finish our sandstone tiles.
Ways to support your child at home this week
  • Read with them at least three times a week.
  • Help them to recall their 2's, 5's, 10's  and 3's times tables.
  • Help you child to learn their weekly spellings and perhaps some from the common exception word lists found in their home school books.
  • Try estimating amounts of objects e.g. coins in a purse, pasta in the pan or raisins in a bowl.


Week Commencing 25.1.16
In English this week we will be starting a new unit of work on fantasy stories. On Monday we will complete a cold task based on a fantasy clip. Then we will be reading Mappa Mundi and The Dragon Machine by Helen Ward. Our focus this week will be using adjectives to describe a character.
In maths we will continue our work on digital time. Then focus on ordering numbers smallest to largest and finding numbers in-between. We will then be rounding to the nearest ten.
In creative curriculum we will be researching Ancient Egyptian Gods using books, Ipads and laptops. We will also be using clay to produce tiles to write on in hieroglyphs.

  • Help you child to learn their weekly spellings and perhaps some from the common exception word lists found in their home school books.

Week Commencing 18.1.16
In English this week we will be consolidating using the correct punctuation with a particular focus on the use of question marks and apostrophes. We will be doing this through our Ancient Egypt topic. Looking at detail at different artefact's will enable us to ask lots of questions. We are continuing to ensure we write in cursive style and use our listening skills.
In maths the focus is 3D shape and analogue and digital time. We will be trying to tell the time on both analogue and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes. In mental maths we will continue to count in 2's, 5's, 10's and introduce 3's.
In creative curriculum we will be focusing on our history topic, looking closely at why Ancient Egyptians settled near the River Nile, Using sources of evidence and learning about hieroglyphics.
Our computing and PSHCE work will also continue this week.

Week Commencing 11.1.16
In English this week we will be learning about limericks. We will be reciting limericks and adapting limericks to make them our own. We will revisit our work on expanded noun phrases and rhyme. There will be a big handwriting focus this week.
In maths we will be looking at the difference between two numbers and solving missing number problems. We will continue to count in 2s, 5s and 10s.
In the afternoons we will revisit our going for goals PSHCE theme, enjoy learning how to keep safe when we have our BIG TALK session and start our history work about ancient Egypt.

  • Try to learn a limerick off by heart together.


Week Commencing 4.1.16
In English this week we will begin a new unit of work based on nonsense poems. We will be initially completing our cold task writing a poem about a puzzled Santa. Then reading and memorising 'The Owl And The Pussy poem. We will spend time looking at the language used in this poem and spot and change adjectives to adapt the poem.

In Maths we will focus on place value using our knowledge to write addition and subtraction calculations. We call these easy calculations in our class! We will also we working on the recall of our 2's, 5's and 10's times tables.

In creative curriculum we will be revisiting forces from last term ensuring we understand the relationships between magnetic fields. We will be using bar magnets to observe and then record our findings.
In computing we will start looking at how to find and copy images. We will also learn how to save them into our folders.
