Spring Term Learning

Week Beginning 23.3.15
This week we will be having a science, design and technology week. We will continue our work on materials focusing on carrying out experiments to test strength, water resistance and absorbency. We will learn how to conduct a fair test, record our results and draw a conclusion.
In design and technology we will be designing and making vehicles with axles. Then we will evaluate our finished product.

Week Beginning 16.3.15
In English this week we will be looking at character description, settings and story plots. We will base our work around the book 'The Night Pirates' We will also be writing our own stories this week.
In maths we will be multiplying and finding missing numbers in number sequences.
In creative curriculum this week we are starting our science work about materials. We will name and recognise different materials and discuss whether they are natural or man made. We will be going on a materials hunt and record our findings by taking pictures on the ipods.

Ways to help your child at home
  • Continue to read at home at least 3 times a week and write comments about how well they read in their reading records.
  • Spend some time spotting different materials around the house.
  • Have a go at the online maths games. Remember login details are in you child's reading record.
  • Spend some time counting in 2's, 5's and 10's.


Week Beginning 9.3.15
In English this week we will be focusing on recounts and discussing that recounts are in past tense and need to interest the reader.
In maths we will be counting in 2's,3's,5's and 10's. Then we will be revisiting multiplication facts.
In creative curriculum we will be learning about train transport throughout the ages and then focusing on George Stephenson who invented the Rocket.

Ways to help your child at home
  • Continue to read at home at least 3 times a week.
  • Spend some time making up adventure stories verbally.
  • Research George Stephenson and train transport.
  • Have a go at the online maths games. Remember login details are in you child's reading record.
Week Beginning 2.3.15
In English we will continue our work on fantasy stories. We will be looking at some clips of the children's cartoon Mr Ben and watching how he magically travels to a different place when he steps in the changing room. We will be focusing our punctuation work on question marks, capital letters, full stops, exclamation marks and commas in lists. We will also learn how to use speech bubbles or speech marks.
In maths we will be learning how to measure weight first with non standard units and then with grams and kilo grams. We will use our skills to independently make bun mixture. In addition to this we will be revisiting graph work.
In creative curriculum our history work this week will focus on the history of cars and looking at sources of evidence. We will be putting different cars onto a time line.
In computing we will continue our coding work. We are really enjoying the new computer curriculum. Mrs Thornton is making the work great fun!

  • Ensure that you read at home at least three times a week and record this in your child's reading record book. Remember you can read books on our Bug Club website.
  • Spellings will be given out each Friday. Your child will benefit from your support to learn these.
  • Have a look at the Barkley's bank coding activities together.
  • Discuss how cars have changed since you were a child and dig out some photographs to share together.


Week Beginning 23rd February 2015
This week in English we will start a new book called 'The magic jigsaw'. We will be consolidating our learning about punctuation and completing a number of sentence surgery activities. We will then be planning our own stories about finding a magic object.
In maths we will be focusing on fractions and sharing. We will learn to recognise fractions of shapes and work out fractions of amounts. We will also be doubling and halving.
In creative curriculum we will start our history work about the history of transport.

Week beginning 9th February 2015
This week in English we will be writing our own stories based on Hansel and Gretel or Yaga Baba. We will use story pegs to outline our stories and ensure we add enough detail so that we interest the reader. Our grammar work will focus on capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks for year 1 children. Year two children will look at the use of apostrophes.
In maths we will focus on money, time and shape. We will continue to ensure that our number bond knowledge is instant recall.
In creative curriculum we will be looking at pattern, line, tone and shade in art. In computing we will continue the 'I am a collector' unit. This helps us to learn how to find and import images safely. We will also be discussing Internet safety on Friday which is Internet Safety Day.

  • Ensure that you read at home at least three times a week and record this in your childs reading record book. Remember you can read books on our Bug Club website.
  • Spellings will be given out each Friday. Your child will benefit from your support to learn these.
  • While out and about try and name 2D and 3D shapes. You could also play the 3D shape game allocated to your child on Abacus.
  • Talk to your child about Internet safety. It is Internet Safety day on Friday.


Week beginning 2nd February 2015
This week in English we will be reading 'Baba Yaga and the three black geese' We will be comparing this tale with Hansel and Gretel. Then we will write wanted posters to try and catch evil Baba Yaga.
In Maths we will be adding numbers together by initially adding to the first multiple of ten and then adding on the remaining value. We will look at inverse operations and then use our knowledge of this in our addition. Lastly we will look at the difference between numbers continuing to use our inverse knowledge to support this.
In creative curriculum we will continue our computing topic called 'I am a collector' where we shall be learning how to search for and import images. In art we will be at tint and shade.
We will be continuing with gymnastics in PE and doing lost of skipping in preparation for our competition.

Week beginning 26th January 2015
In English this week we will start a new unit of work looking at stories from different cultures. We will start by looking at different versions of 'The Gingerbread Man'
In maths we will be revisiting place value and partitioning of numbers beyond 100. In our mental starters we will revisit the more than and less than signs, 2D shape, missing numbers, 3D shape and time.
Our creative curriculum work will continue with an art focus on colour mixing. PSHCE will focus on the theme of 'Going For Goals'

Week beginning 19th January 2015
We will be finishing our riddles work this week focusing on writing riddles about fruit. We will continue our work on conjunctions, similes, verbs and adjectives.
In maths we will focus on 3D shape and time (both analogue and digital) During our mental starters we will focus on calculation.
Our creative curriculum work involves learning about primary and secondary colours and making our own colour wheel. We will continue our music using our bodies to make sounds. We will also continue our computing work.

Week beginning 12th January 2015
In English this week we will continue our work on riddles. We will be looking at the features of riddles. Our grammar work will focus on verbs, present tense and similes.
In maths we will be using our number bonds to to support our addition work. We will also be problem solving.
In creative curriculum we will continue our work on sound. We will be designing a science experiment to test the best floor covering for a baby's room. We will discuss our predictions and how to make the experiment fair. We will continue our computing work on algorithms.

Ways to support your child at home this week.
  • Ensure that you get back into the routine of reading at home at least three times a week.
  • Spellings will be given out in Friday and your child will benefit from your support to learn them.
  • Perhaps visit the library and look for books about sound.
  • If you are feeling creative you could make a musical instrument. We would love to see them in class.


Week beginning 7.1.15
In literacy this week we will start our two week unit on riddles. We will be sharing riddles, looking at the features of riddles and identifying the describing words in riddles. We will also discuss how the author writes riddles in present tense.
In maths we will be locating numbers on a bead string, adding and subtracting. These first three days will be used to warm our maths brains up!
In creative curriculum we will start our sound science topic. We will identify sounds sources, understand that sound travels in waves and that the further from the sound source the fainter the sound.
Our computing lessons this half term will be based on algorithms. So this should be very exciting.
