Spring term learning

Week beginning 31st March
Literacy - we will be writing poems about Easter eggs.  We will be using our senses and developing our use of adjectives.  On Wednesday we will be having a reading focus.

Maths - we will be investigating multiples of 2, 5 and 10 and then looking at how to make amounts of money using different coins.

Afternoon work - we will be using our weaving skills to create an Aztec headdress and we will be exploring forces in science.
Week beginning 24th March
Literacy - we are beginning a new unit of work about familiar settings.  We will be using a book called A Lion In The Meadow to explore settings and description.  We will be using adjectives to describe animals.

Numeracy - we will be looking at shape this week.  We will be identifying right angles in shapes and then sorting shapes using Carroll and Venn diagrams.

Afternoon work - we are having an art week this week.  We will be exploring weaving with different materials and then using this technique to create an Aztec head dress.

Week beginning 17th March
Literacy - we are continuing our recounts work.  We will be looking further at using conjunctions to extend our sentences, using time conjunctions to order our sentences and then planning and writing a recount of Farmer Duck's day.
                                            
Numeracy - we will be looking at position and direction and then we will be moving onto measuring in cms in preparation for our investigations in science.

Afternoon work - we will be having musical afternoons this week.  We will be exploring the rhythm and pulse within songs.
                                                 
Remember that it is our Inspire afternoon on Thursday where we will be making Aztec mosaic serpents.

Week beginning 10th March
Literacy - we will be starting our unit of work about recounts.  We will be reading Farmer Duck and the retelling the story and investigating conjunctions to extend our sentences.
On Friday we will be looking at a book called Aliens Love Underpants and doing lots of alien inspired activities.
                             
                             
Numeracy - will will be continuing our work on using number lines for addition and subtraction.
                                             

Afternoon work - we will be finishing our DT work on Mexican wraps by learning how to peel, cut and grate safely, designing and making our wraps.  We will be eating our wraps so we can then evaluate them.
 
                     
 
Week beginning 3rd March
Literacy - we will be planning and writing our own Little Daisy story this week by making changes to the one we know.
                                           
Numeracy - we will be working on addition and subtraction this week.  We will be using a number line to add numbers and find the difference between 2 numbers.  We will then be using this strategy to help us with some money problems.
                                   
Afternoon work - we are beginning our DT topic this week.  We will be looking at a balanced plate to help us understand a healthy diet.  We will be tasting different wraps and discussing our preferences and looking at different types of packaging for wraps.  If you have a wrap for lunch over the weekend, please save the packaging for us to look at on Tuesday.
                                   
Week beginning 24th February

Literacy - we are continuing our work about traditional tales.  We will be reading a story called 'Little Daisy' and will then be retelling the story in story circles and acting out the story.  We will also be looking at using speech bubbles and speech marks this week.
                                                                    
Numeracy - we are beginning the week by looking at odd and even numbers and then moving onto multiplication and fractions.
                                                    

Afternoon work - we will be starting our look at the Aztecs this week.  We will be asking questions about them and then finding out why they settled in Mexico.  In our dance lessons we will be creating our own Mexican Hat Dance.
                                                


Week beginning 10th February

Literacy - we are continuing our work about Little Red Riding Hood.  We will be focussing more closely on the characters in the story.  We will be hot seating the characters and writing character descriptions about them.
 

Numeracy - we are looking at symmetry.  We will be identifying lines of symmetry in shapes and creating our own symmetrical patterns.  We will also be helping Joseph design a colourful symmetrical coat.
   

Afternoon work - we will be continuing our work about Mexico through our art work.  We will be looking at Mexican masks and saying what we like or dislike about the different designs.  We will be making papier mache masks and then decorating them in the style of a Mexican mask.
                                                        
Week beginning 3rd February

Literacy - we are starting our work about traditional tales.  We will be reading a wide range of traditional tales.  We will be looking for the features of traditional tales and focussing closely on Little Red Riding Hood.  We are going to be reading different versions of the story, mapping the story and retelling and acting it out.
 
 

Numeracy - we are concentrating on data handling this week.  We will be sorting using Venn and Carroll diagrams, collecting data in a table then using it to create pictograms and bar graphs.
 

Afternoon work - we are starting our geography work about Mexico.  We will be using atlases to locate Mexico then we will be looking at the similarities and differences between Crowle and Mexico City.

Week beginning 27th Janaury

Literacy - we are continuing our unit of work about non-chronological reports. We will be finding out about polar bears. We will be looking at KWL grids to show our understanding, watching video clips and reading books to find out more about polar bears, looking at the features of reports and then planning and writing our own report about polar bears.


Numeracy - we are continuing our work on addition and subtraction this week. We will be looking at subtracting multiples of 10 from a number, using addition and subtraction facts to 20 and finding a missing number in a number sentence.

Afternoon work - we are finishing our science work about light and dark. We will be looking at reflective materials, so if you have any sparkly bits and pieces, like tinsel, sequins, wrapping paper, we could use for our reflective squares that would be great.

On Thursday we will be exploring the solar system when we visit the Star Dome.  I wonder if we will see Orion or the Great Bear.

Week beginning 20th Janaury
Literacy - we are starting a new unit of work about non-chronological reports.  We will be finding out about wolves.  We will be writing questions and finding the answers to these questions.  We will be making a poster about wolves.

Numeracy - we are focussing on addition this week.  We will be adding numbers on a number line and looking at adding multiples of 10 to a number.

Afternoon work - we are continuing our science work about light and dark.  We will be investigating light sources and looking at shadows and silhouettes.

Tuesday afternoon is the Magic Carpet Theatre production.  Very exciting!

Week beginning 13th January

Literacy - we are continuing our poetry work about stars.  We will be reading and performing poems and then writing our own poem about night time.


Numeracy- we are focussing on measures.  We will be comparing weights and weighing objects using non-standard and standard units.


Afternoon work - we are starting our science work about light and dark.  We will be helping Plot the owl try to overcome his fear of the dark.  We will be investigating which colours can be seen the best in the dark, sorting light sources and finding out which light sources are the best for seeing with.  If you have a torch, can you please bring it in for us to use this week.  Make sure it has got your name on it!


On Thursday we will be taking part in a skipping workshop.  I wonder how many skips we will be able to do in 2 minutes.  Who will be the class champion?

Week beginning 6th January

Literacy - we are starting the term with poetry.  We are going to be reading and writing poems about stars.  I am looking forward to seeing lots of beautiful language to describe the stars.

Numeracy- we are focussing on place value and ordering numbers this week.

Afternoon work - we are starting the term with our SEAL topic 'Going for Goals'.  We will be looking at different ways in which we learn, how to be a VIP and we will be setting ourselves a goal for this half term.
