Spring term learning

Week beginning 21st March 2016
English - we will be completing our work about recounts by writing a nature diary about our Spring stroll around the school grounds.

Maths - we will be learning how to tell the time this week - o'clock and half past, both analogue and digital.

In the afternoons - we will be completing our science work about how heating and cooling can change materials - this may involve chocolate!

Week beginning 14th March 2016
English - we will be we will continue to focus on a non-fiction book called Who Lives Here? We will be sequencing events from a nature walk and orally rehearsing sentences in preparation for writing our own recount. We will pay particular attention to spaces, capital letters and full stops.

Maths - We are focusing on addition and subtraction this week.  We will be adding a 1-digit number by counting on from a 2-digit number; subtracting a 1-digit number by counting back.

In the afternoons - we will be starting our science work about materials.  We will be exploring solids, liquids and gases and we will then move on to look at how materials can be changed by heating and cooling.

Week beginning 7th March 2016
English -  we will be writing our own traditional tale for our hot writing task to see how much we have learnt during this unit of work.  We will then be completing a cold writing task about recounts and then we will be starting our recounts unit of work.

Maths - we will be focusing on place value this week.  We will be identifying how many tens and ones are in 2-digit numbers, finding 10 more and 10 less than any 2-digit numbers and we will be learning how to use 100 squares and bead strings.

In the afternoons -  we will be completing our look at the Ancient Egyptians this week.  We will be learning how to search for pictures on the internet and insert them into a powerpoint and in our Inspire afternoon on Thursday we will be enjoying lots of Egyptian craft activities.

Week beginning 29th February 2016
English - we will be continuing our work about traditional tales.  We will be planning and writing our own versions of the 'Little Daisy' story. 

Maths - we will be learning doubles up to double 10 and revising pairs of numbers that make 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. We will also explore related subtraction facts and use knowledge of pairs of 10 to make pairs to 20 and solve maths word problems.

In the afternoons - we will be continuing our look at the Ancient Egyptians.

On Thursday afternoon we will be having our class treat.  The children have asked for a technology afternoon.  They can bring in ipads (or tablets), remote controlled cars, walkie talkies etc.  The children will also have access to our class laptops and ipads.

Remember that Friday is book day.  We will be taking part in lots of exciting and magical activities.

Week beginning 22nd February 2016
English - we will be continuing our work about traditional tales.  We will be reading a story called 'Little Daisy'.  We will be making story maps, learning how to tell the story using actions and using role play to act out the story.  We will then be looking at speech bubbles and speech marks.

Maths - we will be continuing our work about counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.  This week we will be using the language of multiplication - 'groups of' and looking at the x symbol.  We will also be looking at finding fractions of shapes and reading 1/2, 1/4 and 3/4.

In the afternoons - following on from our Geography work about Egypt, we will be starting our look at the Ancient Egyptians. 

Week beginning 8th February 2016
English - we will be starting our work about traditional tales this week.  We will be starting the week with our cold writing task to retell the story of Little Red Riding Hood.  For the rest of the week we will be becoming familiar with the story of Little Red Riding Hood through story mapping, story telling and role play.

Maths - we will be continuing our look at counting in 2s, 5s and 10s this week.  We will be counting groups of 2, 5 and 10 objects and identifying odd and even numbers.  

In the afternoons - we will be continuing our printing work by using polystyrene tiles.
 
Week beginning 1st February 2016
English - we will be completing our work about non-fiction texts by writing about owls.  We will be asking questions about owls, researching owls and then producing a piece of non-fiction writing all about owls.

Maths - we will be counting in 2s, 5s and 10s this week.  We will also be estimating and counting groups of 5 and 10.

In the afternoons - we will be artists this week.  We will be investigating different printing techniques.  

Week beginning 25th January 2016
English - we will be continuing our look at non-fiction texts.  We will be identifying the features of non-fiction books, looking at the difference between fiction and non-fiction sentences and then we will be beginning to write non-fiction sentences.

Maths - we will be looking at 3D shape this week.  We will be identifying and naming different shapes and describing the properties of them.  At the end of the week we will be learning about the days of the week and months of the year.

In the afternoons - we will be continuing our work about Egypt by writing postcards.

Week beginning 18th January 2016
English - we will be starting our work about information texts this week.  We will be looking at the difference between fiction and non-fiction books, looking at the features of non-fiction books and reading lots of different non-fiction books.

Maths - we will be continuing with our work about addition and subtraction.  We will be learning how to add a single-digit number to a larger 2-digit number by counting on.

In the afternoons - we will be continuing with our geography work about Egypt.  We will be looking at different modes of transport and we will then be looking at the weather in Egypt and creating weather reports.

On Tuesday afternoon we will be watching the Magic Carpet Theatre production.

Week beginning 11th January 2016
English - we will be continuing our pattern and rhyme work.  We will be learning and performing skipping rhymes and then we will be writing our own rhymes based on Teddy Bear Teddy Bear and 1, 2 Buckle My Shoe.

Maths - we will be working on addition and subtraction this week.  We will be recalling number facts, learning how to find a missing number in a number sentence and using these facts to help us solve word problems.

In the afternoons - we will be starting our geography work about Egypt.  We will be looking at where we have been on holiday and then locating Egypt on maps and globes.

Week beginning 4th January 2016

English - we will be starting a new poetry unit about pattern and rhyme.  We will be learning to recite a variety of poems including some from other cultures.  We will then be writing extra verses for familiar poems and creating our own rhymes for the Gingerbread Man.

Maths - we will be revisiting place value this week and locating numbers on 100 squares and bead strings.

In the afternoons - we will be scientists again this week.  We will be looking at how objects move on different surfaces and we will be designing and carrying out our own investigations to find out what happens.
