Spring Term's learning

Week commencing 21.03.16
English:
This week in English we are applying our reading skills by completing some reading assessments. We will then have a focus on proof reading before putting the final finishing touches to our performance of Cinderella and Rockerfella.
Maths:
In maths this week we will be furthering our knowledge of fractions and equivalent fractions.

Week commencing 14.03.16
English:
This week we will look further into writing an explanation text, finding more facts bout Tutankhamen's death to place in order using time adverbials. We will also be looking at how to make papyrus paper and practising using our time adverbials and explanation text skills for that.
Maths:
In maths this week we will be developing our mental maths skills by solving lots of fun doubling and halving calculations, as well as conducting a pattern finding investigation using the doubling and halving skills.

Week commencing 07.03.16
English:
We are looking further into our research around the death of Tutankhamen, ordering events chronologically and writing letters as one of the people from the investigation. The work this week will concentrate on the use of past tense verbs, subordinate causes and time adverbials.

Maths:
This week we are focussing on using our 6 and 9 times tables. We will look further into using the grid method for multiplication and then progress to using division to find fractions of amounts.

Week Commencing 29.2.16
English:
This week we will complete our learning about play scripts by using the book The Great Paper Chase and turning it into a play to perform.
Following this, we will be starting a new unit on information texts, which is linked to our topic on Ancient Egypt, called Was Tutankhamen Killed?  We will start by recording facts that we find and then create questions for our own murder investigation.

Maths:
We will start this week by identifying place value in 4 digit numbers by partitioning. We will then practise these skills by forming a human number line, as we did for our 3 digit numbers. In the latter part of the week the children will be practising their mental maths skills, completing a consecutive number investigation on Wednesday and 2 digit mental additions on Thursday.


Week Commencing 22.2.16
English:
We are starting a new unit of work on play scripts for the remainder of this term. This week the children are going to look at how a popular children's book is turned into a film, identifying what may needed to have been added or taken away.

Maths:
This week the children will be focussing on adding and subtracting to the nearest hundred, cementing their knowledge of number bonds to 100.

Week Commencing 08.02.16
English:
This week we are having a focus on grammar. We are going to extend our work on clauses that we started at the end of last week and then move onto how to proof read with maximum effect. Towards the end of the week there will be a SPAG test as well as an unsupported write about a scene from Harry Potter!

Maths:
We will complete our work on measures this week by focussing on measuring and comparing weights and lengths, all practised with fun practical activities! The children will then have to use their addition and subtraction skills to solve word challenges involving weights and measures.

Week Commencing 01.02.16
English:
We will further our work on information texts this week by looking at the design of information leaflets, finding their common features and using our favourite design to create a class booklet about Ancient Egypt. Towards the end of the week we will start to focus on grammar, specifically clauses.

Maths:
We are looking at units of measure this week and will be conducting lots of fun experiments, measuring ourselves and testing the capacity of various containers. We will look at choosing the right equipment to measure with.

Week Commencing 25.01.16
English:
We start English this week looking at the roles of different tribes people in the books we have read about the Amazon Rainforest. The children will take part in a tribal meeting in role as a member of a tribal family and talk and write persuasively as that character. We will then start to look at information texts as in informative posters, designing a 'Save the Rainforest' poster for display.

Maths:
This week we will further the children's accuracy of time and look at time to the nearest minute. We will then move on to focussing on fractions of a 10's number and fractions of a 1's number, including decimals. 

Week Commencing 18.01.16

English:
This week we are starting a new unit of work about information texts.
The children will start this week looking at story books that are based on facts about the amazon rainforest, focussing on deforestation and it's effects. They will explore the lessons in the text through drama.

Maths:
We will be looking once again at telling the time this week. By the end of this week, children should be able to identify o'clock, quarter past, quarter to and half past in analogue and digital formats. Some may progress to interpreting timetables.


Week Commencing 11.01.16

English:
This week, children will be developing their calligram skills, culminating in creating topic themed calligrams about pyramids and mummies.

Maths:
All children will recap division with remainders, column addition and column subtraction and finish the week by selecting the correct operation to solve word problems.

Week Commencing 04.01.16
English:
We start the spring term by looking at Calligrams - shape poems. The children will study poems by James Carter and Roger McGough (a poet they are already familiar with) and create their own calligrams using templates.

Maths:
This week we will recap and move on with multiplication using the grid method and then recap division using the chunking method, progressing to division with remainders.
