This week we are learning...

Week commencing 7th July, 2014

This week our learning focus is holidays; where you like to go, what you might take and how you could travel there. We will be writing lists, sentences and drawing pictures around this theme.
 
In maths this week we will be exploring money, 3d shapes and weight maths problems.
 
 We are also beginning to create the artwork for our summer fayre memory sheets (remember Friday 10th is the deadline for orders), using our memories to play a holiday memory game. Our handwriting focus letters this week are b, h, k, l and t.
 
This week in phonics we are learning how to read and write CVCC words such as damp and tent. We will continue to practise blending skills for reading, segmenting skills for writing and reading tricky words. We will also be learning the names of letters using an alphabet song, practising reading and writing sentences and exploring sentence constructions by playing sentence substitution games.

Week commencing 30th June, 2014

We continue this week with Billy's Bucket by Kes Gray and Garry Parsons. We will be retelling the story and writing the story in our own words.
 
In maths this week we will be exploring addition and subtraction, repeating patterns and solving maths problems.

On Wednesday afternoon is our Sports Day and we hope you can join us. We are looking forward to the running and obstacle races. Don't forget your 50p for an ice-cream!
 
 
 We are also continuing to paint pictures of our favourite animal for the Crowle Show art competition, using our memories to play matching pairs and our handwriting focus letters this week are a, c, d, g, o, p, q.
 
This week in phonics we are learning how to read and write words containing the trigraphs ear, are, ure and igh.  We will continue to practise blending skills for reading, segmenting skills for writing. Our tricky words this week are you, my, said and was. We will also be learning the names of letters in the alphabet, practising reading and writing sentences and exploring sentence construction by playing sentence substitution games.

Week commencing 23rd June 2014

Our story this week is Billy's Bucket by Kes Gray and Garry Parsons. We will be discussing the events in the story and drawing pictures of what we would like to find in Billy's Bucket.

 
In maths this week we will be exploring addition and subtraction, more and less and number bonds to 10 Billy's Bucket themed themed maths stories. We will also be using buckets to explore capacity and we will be ordering numbered buckets to 20.

In PE we will be playing the listening game 'two in a boat' and practising using equipment like balls, bats, hoops and quoits in a circuit training activity.

On Thursday we will be exploring and tasting fish and taking part in lots of different fish themed activities including fish weaving, fish patterns, writing fish poems, singing fish songs and reading non-fiction books about fish.
 
Our artwork activities this week include painting under the sea pictures using pastels on sugar paper and bubble paintings. We are also continuing to paint pictures of our favourite animal for the Crowle Show art competition.
 
Also this week we will be using our memories to learn a star fish poem. Our handwriting focus letters this week are e, f, x, z and s.
 
This week in phonics we are learning how to read and write CCCVC words such as spring and street and think. We will continue to practise blending skills for reading, segmenting skills for writing. Our tricky words this week are do, when, out, what. We will also be learning the names of letters in the alphabet, practising reading and writing sentences and exploring sentence construction by playing sentence substitution games.

Week commencing 16th June 2014

On Monday it is our school trip to Normanby Park and we are really looking forward to our bug hunting activity workshop. On Tuesday we will be writing and drawing pictures about our visit inspired by photographs taken on the day. We will also be writing about the Rainbow Fish story based on our learning last week and learning a new fish poem.

 
In maths this week we will be exploring shape, space and measures in Rainbow Fish themed maths stories.
 
We will also be looking at fish paintings by the artist Jason Scarpace and making our own pictures inspired by this artist. We will also begin painting a picture of our favourite animal for the Crowle Show art competition.
 
Also this week we will be using our memories to play matching pairs and to learn a fish poem. Our handwriting focus letters this week are b, k, h, l and t.
 
This week in phonics we are learning how to read and write two syllable words such as helpdesk and windmill. We will continue to practise blending skills for reading, segmenting skills for writing and reading tricky words they, are, all, little and one. We will also be learning the names of letters in the alphabet, practising reading and writing sentences and exploring sentence construction by playing sentence substitution games.

Week commencing 9th June 2014

In literacy, we are reading 'Rainbow Fish' by Marcus Pfister. We will be making story maps, writing character description, discussing, retelling and sequencing the events of the story and writing sentences about the story.
 
 
In maths this week we will be exploring addition, subtraction and number bonds to ten in Rainbow Fish themed maths stories.
 
 
Our other Rainbow Fish activities will include making a rainbow fish collage, talking about issues from the story is concerned such as friendship and sharing, finger painting scales on a fish puppet, learning a fish poem and singing fish songs.
 
Also this week we will be using our memories to play pirate matching pairs. Our handwriting focus letters this week are k, m, q, r, u, and v.
 
This week in phonics we are learning how to read and write CCVC words such as stop and step. We will continue to practise blending skills for reading, segmenting skills for writing and reading tricky words. Week commencing 2nd June 2014

In literacy, we are reading 'A New Home for a Pirate' by Ronda Armitage. We will be using speech bubble templates to write about what the pirates are saying, ordering and retelling the story and writing sentences about the events. We will also be writing lists about how to be a pirate. Some of us will be using the Ipads to write lists. We will also be labelling a pirate.


 
In maths this week we will be exploring 'sharing' in a maths story about pirate treasure  and adding using money in a pirate shop. We will be exploring bigger numbers on a pirate 100 square and number bonds to 10. We will also be making treasure maps and describing and following directions to the treasure.
 
Wednesday is 'Pirate Day' and we will be coming to school dressed in Pirate clothes. We will be eating pirate snack, singing pirate songs, making pirate crafts and lots of other pirate-themed activities.
 
Also this week we will be using our memories to play pirate matching pairs. Our handwriting focus letters this week are a,c,d,g,o and p.

Week commencing 19th May 2014

In literacy, we are revisiting The Snail and The Whale by Julia Donaldson. We will be writing snail messages in white chalk on black paper. We will also be making 3d shape monsters after the story of the Sphere Monster, taking photos with ipods and writing sentences about them. We will also be looking at a shark powerpoint and making our own sharks with sharp teeth made from paper plates.

In maths this week we will be exploring addition and subtraction, naming and describing flat and solid shapes, sharing a story of halving and a story of doubling and taking part in a ladybird doubling challenge.
 
In PE we will be performing our sea inspired dance to music from The Little Mermaid. and we will be singing songs about the sea.
 

 
 We will also be using our memories on a colour memory walk. Our handwriting focus letters this week are i, j, m, n, r.

On Thursday is our INSPIRE afternoon and we hope you can join us to make a sea creature mobile.

Week commencing 12th May 2014

In literacy we will be writing sentences about the Tiddler story and reading sentences and captions about the sea and sea creatures independently. We will also be discussing coasts and making a seascape collage.

 
In maths this week we will be problem solving using numbers to 20 and naming and describing 2d and 3d shapes. 
 
In PE we will be practising moving in different ways - hopping, skipping and jumping and continuing our sea inspired dance movements to music.
 
 
 We will also be using our memories playing Kim's game with seaside objects and singing sea songs. Our handwriting focus letters this week are i, j, m, n and r.

Week commencing 5th May 2014

In literacy we will be sharing the story The Snail and The Whale by Julia Donaldson. We will be listing the sea creatures from our 'sea' themed stories, drawing them and writing sentences about them.

In maths this week we will be practising addition by counting on and exploring measures by measuring fish with cubes and weight with the balance scales. We will also be ordering numbers to 20 and looking at ordering a small selection of numbers. 
 
In PE we will be performing sea inspired dance moves to movements and playing listening games such as 'two in a boat'. Our challenge this week is to make a ball of plasticine float.
 
 
We will also be using our memories retell the Tiddler story and singing sea songs. Our handwriting focus letters this week are b, h, k, l and t.

Week commencing 28th April, 2014

In literacy we will be sharing the story Tiddler by Julia Donaldson. We will be thinking about the events in the story and  creating story maps on large paper. We will be writing sentences about Tiddler’s adventures and making lists of the different fish characters in the story. Some of us will be making lists using the ipads and some of us will be drawing and labelling the fish we have seen. We will also be drawing, labelling and making lists of items we may choose to take on holiday.
 
In maths this week we will be practising subtraction by counting backwards and exploring more and less. We will also be ordering numbers to 20 and looking at ordering a small selection of numbers. We will be exploring patterns through the story Hooray for Fish by Lucy Cousins and making our own fish with repeating patterns.
 
In PE we will be using different props such as scarves and blue/ whit pomp oms to create a sea dance inspired by our wave poems.
 
 
We will also be using our memories to play a seaside –themed matching pairs game on the ipads and making mini fish shaped tuna and cucumber sandwiches for snack and singing sea songs. Our handwriting focus letters this week are a, c, d, g, o, p and q.

We will begin by looking at waves through poems, pictures and videos. We will be thinking of words to describe them and writing wave poems. We will also be painting a wave picture.

In PE we will be practising travelling and balancing on the small apparatus.

Week commencing 24th March 2014

This week our literacy learning is based on the story of The Enormous Turnip. We will be discussing the characters, events and the setting at the beginning and end of the story. We will explore the language in the story and role-play the story to help with retelling. We will also be discussing farms and farming and writing our own farm poems and completing our sentence work on the Farmer Duck story focusing on using punctuation correctly.
 
In numeracy we will be exploring capacity using different containers in the water tray, exploring more and less and recognising and describing 2d and 3d shapes.

In PE we are using dance movements to retell the story of The Enormous Turnip. We are also making story character masks and puppets, painting pictures of farm animals and singing farm songs accompanied by percussion.

In phonics we are focussing on trigraphs igh, ear, air and ure. We will also be practising blending and segmenting words containing these phonemes including words with two syllables. We will be revising all our previously taught tricky words and we will be practising writing these words on whiteboards. We will be continuing to learn how to read and write sentences and to learn the letter names (the alphabet).

Week commencing 24th March 2014

This week our literacy learning is based upon the book Farmer Duck by Martin Waddell. We will be discussing the characters, events and the setting at the beginning and end of the story. We will explore the language in the story and try to use it our own retelling and writing. We will be painting pictures of the animals in the story, writing sentences about them and writing about what they may be saying in speech bubbles.
 


 
In numeracy we will be ordering numbers from 0-20, exploring more and less using number lines, using balances to order objects heaviest to lightest and solving addition and subtraction number problems.

 In PE we are practising ball skills. We will be playing Robin's Nest in teams, throwing and catching with a partner using a large sponge ball, throwing into targets and rolling accurately. Our handwriting letters this week are i, j, m, n, r. In music we are singing farm songs. On Friday we will be using Ipads, Beebots and remote control toys.
 
 
We are also planting flowers this week and labelling the parts of a flower.

In phonics we are focussing on writing digraphs and trigraphs (graphemes). We will also be practising blending and segmenting words including words with two syllables. We will be revising all our previously taught tricky words and we will be practising writing these words on whiteboards. Week commencing 17th March 2014

This week we will be discussing the beginning, middle and end parts of stories and why it is important to tell and write stories in the correct order. We will be writing the beginning part of a familiar story drawing on story language.
 
In numeracy we will be using balances to compare to objects. We will be finding out which one is the heaviest and which one is the lightest. We will be recording our results using pictures. We are also exploring counting on in2s, 5s and 10s on number lines and solving simple addition and subtraction number problems.

 In PE we are practising travelling in different ways using the small apparatus, jumping stations and arches. Our handwriting letters this week are e, f, b, z and x. In music we are continuing our work on singing songs with two notes and playing the tunes on chime bars. In ICT we are learning how to use programmable toys.
 
 
We are also listening to weather sounds, painting a rainbow picture using a cotton bud, making an Aztec mask and learning how to cross the road safely. We will also be playing a 'copying' action game to improve our memory skills.

Week commencing 10th March 2014

This week we will be writing sentences about the story 'The Dinosaur Who Lost His Roar' by Russell Punter. We will also be looking at signs of Springtime and decorating a plant pot with tissue paper and glue.
 
 
 
In numeracy we are counting in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s and exploring money through adding 2p, 5p and 10p coins. We will also be measuring items using non-standard units and finding out who is the tallest boy or girl in our class.

 In PE we are creating a sequence of dinosaur movements based on photograaphs of dinosaurs and we will be performing this to a piece of classical music. Our handwriting letters this week are b, h, k, l and t. In music we are singing songs with two notes and playing the tunes on chime bars. We will also be following directions and using positional language on a computer programme.

On Thursday we hope you can join us at our inspire afternoon where we will be enjoying AZTEC-themed art.

Week commencing 3rd March 2014

This week we are reading The Dinosaur who Lost his Roar by Russell Punter. We will be retelling and role-playing the story. We are going to record our super sentences and any wonderful words we use onto the Ipads, chatterboxes and microphones. Later in the week we will be retelling the story as a group, using actions to help us remember. We will also be looking at dinosaur story settings and we are going to create our own dino-land settings using various craft and construction materials.

On Tuesday it is pancake today and we will be making pancakes for snack-time with Mrs Lee and exploring subtraction through tossing pancakes! 
 
 
In PE we are going to learn a new warm up game called 'Robin's Nest' and we will be choreographing a new dinosaur dance using some of the moves we practised last week and with some new ideas. Our handwriting letters this week are a, c, d, g, o, q. We will also be singing question and answer songs and exploring simulations in ICT.

Week commencing 24th February 2014

This week our dinosaur adventure helps us to further explore non-fiction texts by labelling dinosaur diagrams and pictures. We will be looking at pictures of dinosaurs and choosing colours to paint our own dinosaur. In numeracy we will be practising addition and subtraction, using mathematical vocabulary and recording number sentences. We will be meeting our class Rhyme-A-Saurus who is going to help us complete rhyming strings (he will only eat rhyming words!). In PE we are putting together a class dinosaur dance using different dinosaur moves inspired by a range of media.
 

Handwriting practice this week concerns the letters k, m, q, r, u and v in cursive script and in memory skills we are learning how to use actions to help us recall the events of a story.We will be singing dinosaur songs and exploring the steady beat in music with a dinosaur stomp!

Week commencing 10th February 2014

This week we continue our travels in the land of the dinosuars. We will be looking at non-fiction texts about dinosuars and writing our own dinosaur facts.  In numeracy we will be describing and naming 2d and 3d shapes in the dinosaur shape swamp. We will be singing dinosaur songs, printing dinosaur footprints with paint and practising our memory skills with a dinosaur themed auditory memory game.
 

We will be learning about the origin of St Valentine's day and making a heart collage. In PE we are learning how to jump off small apparatus and land safely. We will also be learning about different food groups and the importance of eating a balanced diet. We will be cutting out and sticking food pictures on a paper plate to create a balanced meal of our choice.
 

In phonics we are focussing on the phonemes ‘qu', 'ou', 'oi' and 'ai'. We will be practising blending and segmenting words containing these phonemes and reading words with two syllables. We will be revising all our previously taught tricky words and we will be practising writing these words on whiteboards. We will be continuing to learn how to read and write sentences and to learn the letter names (the alphabet). In addition this week we will be playing a game called sentence substitution which will help us to understand how sentences are structured.

Week commencing 3rd February 2014

This week we leave the ice age on Monday and venture back in time to the land of the dinosaurs. We will begin by exploring where dinosaurs lived, their names, what they looked like and what they ate.
 

In literacy we will be finishing our writing about the penguin story and writing names for our hatching baby dinosaurs. We will also be writing lists of ingredients for our fossil cookies on Thursdays. Some children will be making lists on Ipads.

In numeracy we are exploring number bonds to ten and practising counting forwards and backwards from different numbers.

In PE we are travelling in different ways whilst using different equipment. We will also be playing a dinosaur memory pairs game.

In phonics we are focussing on the phonemes ‘er', 'oa' and 'ar'. We will be practising blending and segmenting words containing these phonemes and reading words with two syllables. We will be revising all our previously taught tricky words and we will be practising writing these words on whiteboards. We will be continuing to learn how to read and write sentences and to learn the letter names (the alphabet). In addition this week we will be playing a game called sentence substitution which will help us to understand how sentences are structured.

Week commencing 27th January 2014

This week we continuing our travels in colder climates, but this time we are travelling back in time to the ice age. We will be exploring what the world was like during this period of history and about the animals that lived during this time.
 

Our writing focus this week is writing sentences in speech bubbles based upon our icy explorations. We continue our addition work in numeracy this week, playing numeracy games that require us to add two numbers together. We are learning how to add by counting on from the biggest number.

We will also be making snowprint pictures, investigating melting and baking icebergs (coconut macaroons). Our physical focus this week is throwing and catching. On Thursday we will be exploring the Star Dome which will be set up in the hall.

On Friday we will be exploring 'beat' in our music session and practising our memory skills by playing 'I went to the ice age and I took...!

Week commencing 20th January 2014

The cold weather is nearly upon us and in Little Owls we are travelling to even colder climates. We will be discussing how we might get there, what we may see and who lives there.
 

Our shared reading this week will have an Arctic theme. We will be reading and sequencing 'Penguin' by Polly Dunbar and making a polar bear snowy painting inspired by 'Polar Bear, Polar Bear What do you Hear?' by Bill Martin Jnr and Eric Carle. On Thursday we are discussing melting and freezing and we will be making ice lollies to eat at snacktime.

In numeracy we are learning how to add two 2-digit numbers by counting on from the biggest number, to describe where things are by using positional language. In literacy we are retelling and sequencing a familiar story and practising our cursive formation.

On Tuesday we are looking forward to the Magic Carpet performance and on Friday we will be pitch-matching in our singing session and practising our memory skills by playing matching pairs.

In phonics we are focussing on the phonemes ‘oo', 'ar' and 'or'. We will be practising blending and segmenting words containing these phonemes and reading words with two syllables. Our tricky words this week are no and go and we will be practising writing these words on whiteboards. Week Commencing 13th January 2014

We really enjoyed exploring space last week. We thought of lots of things we would like to find out about Space such as:

What is the moon made of?
Why is the moon shiny?
Why is the moon different shapes?
What are the planets called and how many are there?
What are craters?
 
This week we will continue to explore space by answering these questions and finding new ones. In addition we will be making-up names for the aliens we made last week and we will be writing their names using our best cursive formation. Our maths focus this week is estimation. We will be estimating how many objects there are in a group or container and then checking our estimation by touch counting. We are also learning to recognise numbers 0-20 and 3d shapes (cube, cuboid, sphere, pyramid and cone) and beginning to explore capacity (full, half full, empty).

Our physical development this week is based around 'Space' movements. 

We will be exploring the solar system and looking at the position of planets in relation to the sun. We will be making a planet hats using recycled newspaper. On Thursday we will be baking moon rocks. We will also be singing lots of Space songs and using object recall to practise our memory skills.

In phonics we are focussing on the phonemes ‘ai', 'ee', 'igh'/'ie' and 'oa' . We will be practising blending and segmenting words containing these phonemes. Our tricky words this week are was, my, to and do and we will be practising writing these words on whiteboards. Week Commencing 6th January 2014

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I hope you had a lovely Christmas holiday.Our new curriculum theme is ‘Time Travellers’. In the Foundation Unit we will begin this new topic by looking at travelling to the moon. We will be reading ‘Whatever Next’ by Gill Murphy and discussing the characters and events in the story. We will use props to role-play and retell this story. We will also be reading ‘Aliens Love Underpants’ by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort and making playdough aliens using lots of exciting materials. We will be looking at pictures of space and discussing what it might be like to travel in space.

We will be using splatter paint and collage to make space pictures and our PE session this week focuses on space travel movements. In maths we are exploring more and less/ fewer using aliens.
 

In phonics we are focussing on the phonemes ‘ar’, ‘th’ and ‘ng’. We will be practising blending and segmenting words containing these phonemes. Our tricky words this week are we, me, be, he, she and we will be practising writing these words on whiteboards. We will be continuing to learn how to read and write sentences and to learn the letter names (the alphabet).
