3rd February 2014
In literacy this week we will be focusing on information texts. Our books will be based on the arctic which links to our geography work. We will be learning how to use a contents and index page and retrieving facts.
In phonics this week we will be looking at long and short vowels. We will also be focussing on tricky words.
In math's we will be learning how to use a balance. We will be weighing using non standard and then standard units.
Our creative curriculum work will see Barnaby Bear travel to Egypt. We will be looking at the contrasting location and comparing it to Crowle.

WAYS TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD THIS WEEK
  • Complete the cursive letter formation homework.
  • Ensure your child reads at least three times a week.
  • Help them to learn their tricky words.
  • Share information books and discuss their features.

27th January 2014
This week in literacy we will be planning and writing our own stories about space. We will also be working hard on our cursive letter formation.
In math's we will be adding using a blank number line and looking at the addition of larger numbers using a hundred square. Reception children will concentrate on number recognition to 20 and ordering to 20.
In creative curriculum we will continue to follow Barnaby Bear on his travels. I think he is going to be visiting a very cold place this week. Can you guess where? Our investigations will see us explore how animals keep warm in cold places. So remember to ask your child about blubber at the end of the week.
We are also visiting the STARDOME this week. This will consolidate our science learning from the past few weeks.

20th January 2014
This week in Literacy we will be watching a literacy Shed clip about travelling to the moon. We will be thinking about alternative endings, designing and describing our own aliens and at the end of the week writing or telling our own space stories.
In math's we will be adding and subtracting on a number line and then a hundred square. We will also be learning about function machines.
In our creative curriculum work we will start our geography topic. This week we will be introduced to Barnaby Bear. We will look at the globe and maps to identify the UK, sea and land. We are also going to play a game to help us locate where we live on the map.

13th January 2014
In Literacy this week we will be looking at humorous poems. These will include 'Where teachers keep their pets' and 'Making faces' We will be looking at the use of capital letters for peoples names and completing rhyming strings and couplets.
In phonics we will be using phoneme frames to help us to write cvcc words e.g... bump, camp and chimp. We will also be consolidating our learning of the trickier digraphs which we have been finding hard to remember e.g... ea, oa, ur, ai, ow. oy.
In math's this week we will be looking at and investigating 3D shapes. We will be also revisit our 2D shape work. Some of our mental starters will involve counting to 100 and counting in twos and tens.
Our creative curriculum work will be science based this week. We will be looking at why we have day and night including how he earth rotates. We will also be looking at stars, meteors and meteorites and shooting stars.

WAYS TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD THIS WEEK

  • Spend some time finding 3D shapes in the environment e.g.pyramid, cube, cuboids, cylinder and cone.
  • Help then to consistently write their numbers the correct way around. (in homework handwriting book)
  • Read with your child at least three times a week.
  • Play some phase 3 and 4 games on the phonics play website.
7th January 2014
In Literacy this week we will be reading, How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers and other poetry about stars. The children will be inventing their own ways of catching stars. I am looking forward to listening to all of their inventive ways to catch a star. We will be focusing on the use of adjectives and learning how to 'magpie/steal' ideas from other people including authors and poets in order to improve our own work.
In Math's this week we will be focusing on money. We will learn to recognise the different coins and realise that there is not a coin for all amounts. We will be starting to add money to find totals.
In creative curriculum we will be looking at light and dark and exploring shadows. We will also discuss things which we are good and how to improve n other areas in order to achieve our goals.
Please remember to bring back your PE bags because we have PE the first morning back at school.

WAYS TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD THIS WEEK
  • Read with your child at least three times a week.
  • Look at coins in a purse or wallet and discuss coin amounts.
  • Practise writing their name cursively.
