This week we are learning about ...

Week beginning 18th July
It is our last few days as our Elf Ows 'jigsaw'.  We will be spending the taking part in lots of summer themed activities - maths problem solving and writing summer senses poems.

Week beginning 11th July
English - we will be writing and illustrating our own version of Handa's Surprise.

Maths - we will be having an assessment week this week.

In the afternoons - we will be continuing our history work about the Olympic games by looking at the significance of the Olympic rings.

Also this week - it is the 'wedding' on Monday.
                       - we will be watching the dress rehearsal of the Y5 and Y6 concert on Tuesday morning.

Week beginning 4th July
English - we will be continuing our work about Handa's Surprise by planning our own version of the story.

Maths - we will be having a focus on handling data.

In the afternoons - we will be continuing our work about the Olympic Games.

Week beginning 27th June 2016
English - we will begin a new unit of work about stories from other cultures based around the story Handa's Surprise by Eileen Browne. We will be using describing words and phrases to describe objects and characters in the story.

Maths - we will be having a focus on time and measuring. We will be learning to tell the time using analogue and digital clocks to the quarter hour. We will also be revising the days of the week and months of the year. We will also be measuring using non-standard units and recording our results on block graphs.

In the afternoons - we will be completing our art work ready for Crowle Show, preparing for the summer fayre and lots of reading and handwriting.

Week beginning 20th June 2016
English - we will be finishing out report writing work this week.  We will be finding out the answer to our big question - 'Why do elephants have big ears?'  We will be planning and writing our own reports about how elephants use their trunks.

Maths - we will be having a focus on multiplication this week.  We will be identifying odd and even numbers and then finding groups of 2, 5 and 10.  We will also be learning how to use the 'x' symbol in our number sentences.

In the afternoons - we will be finishing our science work about animals by looking at life cycles of different animals, especially our caterpillars.  We will be continuing our My Money Week work by making papier mache piggy banks.
 
It is sports day on Wednesday.  I hope you can join us for a fun-packed day.


Week beginning 13th June 2016
English - we are continuing our report writing unit this week.  We are focusing on labelling diagrams, writing captions, using topic words, retrieving information and looking for clues in a text.  Wow!  We are going to be busy.

Maths - to tie in with My Money Week we are having a money focus in class.  We will be consolidating our learning about number bonds, addition and subtraction using money as a context.

In the afternoons - we will be learning about how we get our money and then how to keep our money safe. 
 
Our inspire afternoon in on Thursday when we will be making our own hand puppets.  Please remember your 'grown-up' scissors.

Week beginning 6th June 2016
English - we will be beginning a unit of work on report writing. We will be exploring a Big Question: Why do elephants have big ears?, reading an interactive eBook, finding information and learning how to write labels and captions. We will begin to answer the Big Question this week leading to planning and writing our own reports based on a model. 

Maths - we will be focusing on number and place value. We will be locating 2-digit numbers on a beaded line and 100-square; comparing and ordering 2-digit numbers up to 100 and saying a number between two numbers; identifying 10s and 1s in 2-digit numbers and solving place-value additions.

In the afternoons - we will be starting our new science topic about different types of animals.

Week beginning 23rd May 2016
English - we will be writing our own Sound Collector poem and then we will be having a focus on publishing our poems in different ways.  We will be concentrating on our handwriting and presentation and we will be using ict to publish our poems too.

Maths - we will be focusing on money this week.  We will be revising the value of coins and notes, making totals using different coins and buying items using 2ps, 5ps and 10ps.

In the afternoons - we will be having a DT focus this week.  We will be investigating, designing and making a range of tasty salads.

Week beginning 16th May 2016
English - we will be having a poetry week this week.  We will be reading a book called 'It Looked Like Spilt Milk'.  We will be discussing what we see in the clouds and we will be writing our own poem in a similar style.  We will be ending the week by reading a poem called 'The Sound Collector' and we will then be writing our own poem in a similar style.

Maths - we will be focusing on fractions this week.  We will be finding halves and quarters of shapes and quantities.

In the afternoons - we will be continuing with our art work about portraits.  We will be drawing a self portrait using pencils and then we will be creating a portrait of our friends using different media.

Week beginning 9th May 2016
English - we will be continuing our work about Dougal the deep-sea diver this week.  We will be writing postcards and a diary entry for the mermaid and then at the end of the week we will be planning a new adventure for Dougal.

Maths - we will be continuing our work about measure this week.  We will be focusing on weight.  We will be comparing the weight of different objects and then using non-standard and standard measures to weigh different objects.

In the afternoons - we will be staring our art work about portraits this week.  We will be having a close look at our facial features.

Week beginning 2nd May 2016
English - This week we will be continuing our fantastic journeys by reading 'Dougal The Deep-Sea Diver' by Simon Bartram.  We will be exploring under the sea settings and comparing them with home.  We will also be looking at how to compose a diary entry and we will end the week by learning how to join our ideas by using the conjunction 'and'.

Maths - This week we will be focusing on measures.  We will be comparing capacities of containers using direct comparison.  We will also be measuring capacity using uniform non-standard units and recording results and information.  We will end the week by making and using a measuring vessel for capacity.

In the afternoons - we will finish our science work about our bodies by looking at our sense of sight, smell and touch.

Week beginning 25th April 2016
English - we will be continuing our work about Bob - the man on the moon.  We will be planning and writing our own stories about one of his adventures.  Later in the week we will be meeting Bob's cousin Dougal the deep-sea diver.  We will be comparing the stories and looking at how the setting of this story is different to home.

Maths - we will be continuing our work on addition and subtraction this week.  We will be learning to add three small numbers by spotting pairs to 10 and doubles; adding and subtracting 10 and multiples of 10 to and from 2-digit numbers.

In the afternoons - we will be continuing our science work about our bodies by investigating our 5 senses.

Week beginning 18th April 2016
English - we will be starting a new unit called 'Fantastic Voyages'.  We will be reading 'Man on the Moon' by Simon Bartram.  We will be exploring the character of Bob and writing character descriptions about him and we will be sequencing his day and writing a recount.

Maths -  we will be focusing on addition and subtraction this week.  We will be using number facts to add and subtract 1-digit numbers to/from 2-digit numbers; adding pairs of 1-digit numbers with totals above 10 and sorting out additions into those you ?just know' and those you need to work out.

In the afternoons - we will be starting our science topic about parts of our bodies.  We will be naming our body parts and then we will be looking at the similarities and differences between humans and other animals.

Week beginning 12th April 2016
English - we will be starting a new poetry unit this week.  We will be reading poems about growing up. We will be discussing the language in the poems, recreating poems with drama and writing sentences for our own poems.

Maths - we will be focussing on more and less; finding 1 more and 1 less, 10 more and 10 less than any 2-digit number; exploring patterns on the 100-square; understanding place value in 2-digit numbers and identifying 10s and 1s. 


In the afternoons - we will be investigating, designing, making and evaluating puppets.
