Week beginning 13th July, 2015
 
This week in Little Owls our focus is holidays and we will be reading lots of stories on this theme. We will be exploring seasides and writing postcards and poems.


In maths we will be doing pirate problem solving and exploring more and less.

In phonics we will be revising previously taught digraphs and trigraphs. We will also be learning strategies to read two-syllable words. We will be learning the alphabet (letter names) using games and an alphabet song. We shall also be applying our skills in reading and writing simple sentences containing CVCC and CCVC words. All tricky words will be practiced.


We will also be creating a sand art beach picture, improving our jumping skills in PE, playing a seaside memory game, "I went to the seaside and I took..." and drawing a beach scene on a computer art program. Guided reading and cursive handwriting practice will be ongoing throughout the week.

Week beginning 6th July, 2015
 
This week in Little Owls we will continue to explore sea creatures and reptiles. We will be reading stories such as "Rainbow Fish" by Marcus Pfister. We will be writing acrostic poems using this theme as our inspiration.


In maths we will be practising counting in 2s and adding by counting on from the biggest number.

In phonics we will be revising previously taught digraphs and trigraphs. We will also be learning strategies to read two-syllable words. We will be learning the alphabet (letter names) using games and an alphabet song. We shall also be applying our skills in reading and writing simple sentences containing CVCC and CCVC words. This week in Little Owls we will be exploring snails and sea creatures following our interest in the stories "The Snail and the Whale" and "Tiddler" by Julia Donaldson. We will be writing messages on rocks-just like the snail in the story!

In  maths we are going to be naming and describing 3D shapes and exploring addition and subtraction maths problems.

In phonics we will be revising all digraphs and trigraphs and learn strategies to read words which contain them. We will also be learning the alphabet (letter names) using games and an alphabet song and applying our skills in reading and writing simple sentences. This week we will be revising all of our tricky words and playing tricky word bingo.

 
 
We are also going to be observing our bean plants and writing in our bean diaries, playing a sea animals memory game and having a final practice before Sports Day! Cursive letter formation and guided reading  will be ongoing throughout the week.

This week in Little Owls we will be exploring minibeasts. We are going to be reading stories such as "What the Ladybird Heard" and "Superworm" by Julia Donaldson. We are going to make story maps and shall write sentences from the story on ladybird templates, observe our bean plants and writing in our bean diaries.

In maths we will be exploring doubling and halving through a ladybird maths problem and naming and describing 3D shapes.  

In phonics we will be revising previously taught phonemes and we will also be exploring split digraphs and spotting them in words to help us with our reading. We will also be learning the alphabet (letter names) using games and an alphabet song and applying our skills in reading and writing simple sentences containing CVCC and CCVC words. Our tricky words are   have  there   like   little   they   (we are now trying to spell these in our writing too)  

 
 
We are also making symmetrical butterfly paintings, taking part in a respecting minibeast circle time, bug hunting, going on a minibeast adventure on the Ipads, taking part in running and obstacle races in PE, playing a "What am I?" minibeast identification game and enjoying minibeast songs and rhymes. Cursive handwriting practice and guided reading will be ongoing throughout the week.

Week Beginning 15th June, 2015

This week in Little Owls we will be exploring healthy eating. We will be reading Handa's Surprise and The Hungry Caterpillar. We are also going to be writing sentences about Handa's Surprise using describing words.

 In maths we will be exploring addition through a skittle game, making a pictogram of our favourite fruits and interpreting the data on the graph.

In phonics we will be revising previously taught phonemes. We will also be learning strategies to read two-syllable words such as "windmill" and "sandpit". We will also be learning the alphabet (letter names) using games and an alphabet song and applying our skills in reading and writing simple sentences containing CVCC and CCVC words. Our tricky words this week are

We will also be making fruit kebabs and butterfly pictures. We are going to observe our bean plants and update our bean diaries too. This week in Little Owls we continue to explore wildlife animals but move our focus to the jungle. We will be reading books such as Dear Zoo, Rumble in the Jungle and Monkey Puzzle. Following our visit to Yorkshire Wildlife Park we will be painting pictures of our favourite wildlife animal. We will be recreating a jungle safari bus and counting and describing the animals we see on our journey.

We will also be writing information texts about wildlife animals using describing words, observing our bean plants and writing in our bean diaries. 


In numeracy we will be exploring addition and subtraction in a wildlife theme. 

In phonics we will be revising the trigraphs air, ear, ure and igh. We will be practising reading and writing simple words and words with 2 syllables. We will be learning the alphabet (letter names) using games and an alphabet song and applying our skills in reading and writing simple sentences.  Our tricky words are   have     there    like    some   come    was

Week Beginning 1st June, 2015

This week in Little Owls we look forward to our visit to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park and continue our All Creatures Great and Small theme by focussing on the animals we see at the park. We will also be reading Jack and the Beanstalk and writing character descriptions of the Giant.

 
In maths we will be measuring beanstalks and comparing lengths of beanstalks and estimating using beans.

In phonics we will be revising the phonemes  ng, ai, igh, or, ur. We will be practising reading and writing simple words and words with 2 syllables. Week Beginning 18th May, 2015

This week in Little Owls we continue our All Creatures Great and Small theme and our focus is bears. We are going to bring in our own teddy bears  and have a Teddy Bear's picnic after making sandwiches and healthy snacks to eat. Our focus will be on the story "Goldilocks and the three bears" where we will be writing about bears.

In maths we will be exploring capacity and 3D shapes.

In phonics we will be revising the phonemes air and qu. We will be practising reading and writing simple words and words with 2 syllables. Week Beginning 11th May, 2015
 
 
This week in Little Owls we are continuing with our "All Creatures Great and Small" topic focussing on bears. In literacy we will be reading "We're going on a bear hunt" and considering the feelings of the characters and writing speech bubbles to show their thoughts. We will also re-enacting the story and drawing a large scale story map which we will then annotate.

In maths we will be using our bear theme to look at addition bonds to 10 and recording our findings. We will also be practising counting forwards and backwards from different starting points and completing a teddy bear line up challenge.

In phonics we are going to be playing with words by, for instance, soundtalking and writing the word pot and exploring how to make the word spot. We will be repeating this exercise with other words too. We will be practising reading and writing simple words and words with two syllables. We will also be applying our skills in reading and writing sentences. Our tricky words are have  like  some  come  was. 
 
In P.E we are going to re-enact our "We're going on a Bear Hunt" story and put some good moves to the narrative. In literacy we will be reading "The Three Billy goats Gruff" and, as it is election week we will be discussing democracy and voting and Mrs Johnson and Mrs Fawcett will be pitching to see who gets to read the story! We are also going to be reading "The Strange Pet" and designing our own unusual pet, labelling it and writing what it can do.
 

In maths we will be exploring more and less using the large coloured bricks. We will also be comparing strips of squared paper and recording the difference i.e how many more/less? We will also be doubling and halving using a maths story.

In phonics we will be revising the trigraphs air, ear, ure, igh. We will also be learning to read high frequency words and using phoneme frames to help us write words. Week Beginning 20th April, 2015
 

This week we will be writing a story based on Farmer Duck looking specifically at segmenting and punctuation. We will also be reading a list of animal words and taking pictures of them with the Ipods. This will then be used as a starting point for writing captions. 

In maths we will be completing repeating patterns with an animal theme, ordering numbers to 20 and finding numbers on a 100 square.

In phonics we will be writing 2 syllable words, for example "starlight" and clapping syllables. We will also be applying our skills in reading and writing sentences.

Week Beginning 13th April, 2015

Welcome back everyone! We hope that you have all had a fabulous holiday and enjoyed all of those Easter eggs!
 

This week we will be recapping the story of "Farmer Duck" and retelling the story using puppets and discussing the animals plan. We will be putting all our good word choices on our magpie wall ready to use in our independent writing.
 

In numeracy we will be exploring more and less on the mathematicians mat,explaining in words the number sentence and writing it down. We will also be exploring the difference using cubes. 

In phonics we are going to be playing with words by, for instance, soundtalking and writing the word pot and exploring how to make the word spot. We will be repeating this exercise with other words too. We will be practising reading and writing simple words and words with two syllables. This week we are reading "Farmer Duck" by Martin Wardell. We will be talking about the animals that we live on the farm and the jobs that need to be done. We will be making a stick puppet of our favourite character and discussing the characters.

his week in Little Owls we are learning about Shrove Tuesday which happened over the half term holiday. We will be reading "The Runaway Pancake," singing a "make a pancake" song, making and enjoying pancake snack, tossing pancakes and making playdough pancakes! We will also begin our topic work on Dinosaurs.
 
                                             We will be writing instructions about how to make pancakes on paper and writing lists of ingredients on the Ipad notes application. We will be exploring objects associated with dinosaurs, discussing their names and what they are. In groups we will be discussing what we already know about dinosaurs and writing what we would like to find out to shape our learning this term. We are going to create our own class Dinosaur topic book.

In maths we will be practising addition, counting in 2s, measuring bones with unifix cubes and exploring dinosaur repeating patterns.

This week in Little Owls we are celebrating the Chinese New Year. We will be reading the Chinese Zodiac story and thinking and writing a wish to put in our fortune cookies. We will also be reading "The Magic Paintbrush" by Julia Donaldson and labelling the Chinese food that we have tasted. 
 
 
In maths we will be looking at ordinal numbers relating to places in the Chinese New Year race. We are also going to be doing some Chinese themed addition.

This week in Little Owls we continue our exploration of cold climates. Our focus is penguins following our enjoyment and interest of "The Emperor's Egg" story. We will be writing

This week in Little Owls we continue our wintry theme and will be looking at how to build a snowman through a series of pictures. We will be using talk partners to discuss what we would like to do with a snowman that came to life and using the IPads to write lists. The children be using their phonics knowledge to write a caption linked to snowmen. Our main story for the week is a lovely book called “Penguin” by Polly Dunbar.
 
 
In maths we will be looking at a snowman maths story and problem solving including addition, subtraction and sharing.  We will record our ideas using whiteboards. We are also going to be counting in 2s using a number track to help us and reinforcing “teen” number recognition.

This week in Little Owls we continue our Winter weather and exploration of the Arctic/ Antarctic. We will be reading lots of fiction and non-fiction books based on this topic area and exploring ice this week through lots of different activities.
 
 

The children will be using their phonics knowledge to label an Arctic picture,  writing tricky words and using talk partners to discuss some interesting pictures of the Arctic and Antarctic. In maths we will be drawing and describing common 2d shapes, subtracting in an Arctic theme and exploring one more and one less than a given number using number tracks. We will also be guided reading, practising bean bag skills in PE, playing a matching pairs memory game, painting salt snowflakes, practising cursive letter formation and singing Winter songs with a focus on pitch-matching. As a special treat this week we will be watching a performance by The Magic Carpet theatre company.

Week Beginning 12th January

This week we continue our Winter and cold weather theme and focus on the Arctic and Arctic animals. We will be reading story books based on this theme such as "Polar Bear Polar Bear what do you hear?" by Bill Martin and Eric Carle and also look at non fiction books.

We are learning about the Arctic and animals that live there, writing sentences about these animals. We will be ordering the story "Penguin" by Polly Dunbar by threading the story pictures onto string. We will also begin to explore the features of non fiction texts.
 

In maths we will b practising counting in 2s,5s and 10s, measuring using non standard units, exploring numbers using the terms more, less, biggest and smallest and writing numbers. 

In phonics we will be revising previously taught tricky words focussing on the ai, ee, igh and oa phonemes and practising reading and writing sentences. Our tricky words for the week are  was my
 

We will also be moving like Arctic animals, taking part in guided reading, playing an Arctic matching pairs game, painting penguins, making a paper plate walrus, drawing an Arctic animal using a computer art package and playing simple rhythms on chime bars.
 
Week Beginning 5th January
 
 
Welcome back! We hope you've all had a wonderful Christmas. This week we will be settling back into our school routine and sharing our memories of Christmas in a circle time. We will be drawing and writing about a special Christmas memory. We will also be discussing how to keep warm in the Winter weather and making a collage using different materials that keep us warm.
 
 
In numeracy we will begin to explore addition by counting on from the biggest number. We are also going to practise counting in 1's, 2's and 5's.
 
 
We will be keeping our brains fit by playing a memory skills game, practising handwriting, exploring rhythm using instruments and reading our school books.

In phonics we are revising previously taught tricky words focussing on the th and ng phonemes, learning the letter names through the alphabet and practising reading and writing sentences.

Week Beginning 15th December
 
 
We have a fun filled, action packed last week of term in store. We have been practising hard for our Christmas singing concert and are looking forward to performing on Monday and Thursday morning. We also have our Christmas party to enjoy on Monday afternoon which should be great fun. 
 

We will be baking some stained glass window biscuits and continue our Christmas arts and craft provision throughout.

Week Beginning 8th December
 
 
We will be reading lots of Christmas stories this week including The Jolly Christmas Postman and Little Rabbit's Christmas. We will be writing Christmas lists using our phonics knowledge and sound mats to help us.
 
 
n maths we will be using our counting skills to make reindeer dust. We are also going to be counting in 2s and making 10 by using different combinations of ingredients and following instructions.

Week Beginning 1st December
 
 
We have an exciting start to the first week in December as we will be performing one of our Christmas songs to the rest of the school in an Advent assembly. We will be reading and role playing The Christmas Story too this week. We are also going to be writing sentences about a familiar story, describing snow and writing snow poems.

In numeracy we will be finding numbers on advent calendars and filling in the missing numbers. We will also be wrapping solid shapes in Christmas paper and playing in the Post Office role play area where we will explore addition.

In phonics we are learning to recognise and say the phonemes ur, ow and oi. We are also learning the alphabet (letter names) using an alphabet song and applying our skills in reading and writing tricky words and digraphs. Our new tricky word this week is

During P.E we will be making up star, angel and animal dances and in music we will be practising songs for our Christmas concert.

Week Beginning 24th November
 

In literacy we will be reading "Man on the Moon" by Simon Batram and using our phonic knowledge to label a space picture. We are also going to learn about the Rosetta space mission and writing captions in a speech bubble.
       
In numeracy we are going to be making rockets using both 2D and 3D shapes. We are also going to be ordering numbers and seeing if we can spot the missing number.  

In phonics we are learning the new phonemes "oo" ('the 'u' sound as in 'book' and also 'oo' as in 'moon') "ar and "or. We will be learning to spell the tricky words no, go. We will also be using our phonics knowledge to read sentences such as "Will a dog bark if it sees a shark?" "Will a fish forget things?" 

We are continuing to practise our letter formation with our magic pencil programme and tracking sheets. 

Little Owls will also be learning why astronauts float in space and we will be discussing gravity and what it means. 
 

We are going to having an extremely creative week as it is our Christmas Art Day where we will be starting making our cards. It is also our INSPIRE afternoon on Thursday where we will be making paper plate elves for our Christmas hoop. Hope to see you all there.

Week Beginning 17th November

This week in Little Owls we are continuing with our space theme as the children have shown a real enthusiasm for this topic. We will be reading more stories about space and finding out about the moon landing and the solar system. We will be writing a sentence about the "Whatever Next" story by Jill Murphy. We will be using talk partners to talk about what we want to write and using words we have 'stolen' from the story. We will also be labelling aliens using our phonics knowledge.
 
 
In numeracy we will be exploring subtraction in a space theme. We are also going to be exploring doubling using aliens and looking at 3D shapes in space.  

In phonics we will be learning to recognise and say the phonemes ai, ee, oa and ie. We will be practising reading and writing simple words and words with two syllables. We will also be learning the alphabet (letter names) using an alphabet song and applying our skills in reading and writing simple sentences.

Week Beginning 10th November
 
This week in Little Owls our theme is "Space" and we will be reading "Whatever Next" and sequencing the story. We will also look at "Aliens love Underpants" , naming our own aliens and writing their names. We are going to label a space picture using our phonics knowledge.

        
In numeracy we are going to be recognising numbers to 20 and writing these. We will also be working on more and less and adding and taking away activities.

In phonics we are learning to recognise, hear and say the phonemes "sh", "ch", "th" and "ng". One of our favourite phonics play games will be used to help us to write these sounds in words e.g the, then, chop, shock. We will be playing the "Yes, no" game alongside reading sentences such as "Can a fish quack?" "Is a shell a pet?" "Can a hen shop?"

We will continue to practise our letter formation using "Dough disco" by Shonette Bason www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-IfzeG1aC4to warm up our fingers and revise writing the letters j,v,w and x using the magic pencil. We will also be writing the tricky word "the".

In ICT we will be extending our phonics work by playing "Obb and Bob" from the phonics play website (www.phonicsplay.co.uk). During P.E we are exploring balancing on different body parts using beanbags. This week we are also starting our road safety work and discussing the importance of holding hands with an adult when crossing the road.

Throughout the course of the week we will be engaged in a variety of space themed craft activities including creating our very own aliens using pipe cleaners, googly eyes and many other materials.


Week Beginning 3rd November
This week in Little Owls our focus is bonfire night. We begin by reading the story "Fireworks and Aliens" by Harri Romney. We will be using our phonics knowledge to write firework noise words.

In numeracy we are going to explore addition and subtraction in a bonfire theme.
In phonics we are learning to recognise and say the phonemes y and z. We will be practising reading and writing simple words and words with 2 syllables e.g zigzag. We will also be learning the alphabet (letter names) using an alphabet song and applying our skills in reading and writing simple sentences.

We are going to practise our letter formation sing the magic pencil programme and firework tracking sheets. During the course of the week we will have also have lots of fun creating firework pictures using glitter and glue, having hot dog snack, making chocolate apples and discussing how to stay safe on bonfire night. 

Week Beginning 20th October 

This week we are using "Halloween" as our theme and will be reading "Pumpkin Soup" by Helen Cooper and writing words related to making soup. We will also listen to a selection of "Winnie the Witch" stories. 
        
In phonics we are learning to recognise, hear and say the new phonemes j,v,w and x. We will also be learning an alphabet song and practising our blending and segmenting. We are going to read sentences which include tricky words and phonemes we have been learning too, for example  "Did I put the jam in the van?" "Can I visit a pet on a jet?"

In numeracy we will be continuing with addition and also working on size ordering. We will be doing some "pumpkin" number recognition to 20 too. 

In ICT we are going to be making a pumpkin face on the laptops and on the interactive whiteboard.

Week Beginning 13th October

This week we will be reading "The Scarecrow who didn't scare" by Neil Griffiths and Vicki Leigh and "The Scarecrow's Hat" by Ken Brown. We will be writing a sentence about a scarecrow and together we will be writing a letter to a farmer.  
In phonics we are going to be recapping the phonemes we have already learnt as well as introducing "l" and looking at the two ways of writing this sound.

In numeracy we will be introducing number lines and finding one more/one less from a group of up to 10 objects. We will also continue with our addition and looking at taking away.

During ICT we are going to play a feelings game and using the Ipods to take pictures of people who look happy!  We are also going to be taking part in lots of scarecrow craft activities including making a large scale one outside which will be very exciting!



Week Beginning 6th October

This week we are continuing our Harvest theme and will be reading "Oliver's vegetables" by Vivian French and discussing healthy eating. We will also be looking at "Farmer Duck and the traditional tale "Stone Soup".

 
We are going to write a shopping list of vegetables to buy too.

In phonics we are learning to recognise, hear and say the phonemes h,b,f and l as well as recapping 's'. We will also be looking at "ff" and "ss" learning that double letters often go at the end of a word.  "Tricky words "  for this week are

Week Beginning 29th September

In the lead up to Harvest this week we are going to be reading "Little Red Hen," and retelling the story using props.

We are also going to be discussing Autumn and reading Autumn poetry.

In phonics we are learning a new grapheme "ck". We will be listening to it and learning how to read and write it. We will also be learning to recognise, hear and say the phonemes "e, u and r" and practising writing them.  "Tricky words " are also going to be introduced and the words that we will be focussing on are

In maths we are going to be continuing with our number recognition as well as introducing the addition and equals sign. We will be exploring these signs finding out how many "altogether" in a practical way using conkers.

In computing we will be creating pictures on "Revelation natural art" using Autumn colours.  We will also be leaf printing with the paints.



In P.E we will be travelling over low level apparatus in different ways and talking about the importance of cooling down.


Week Beginning 22nd September

This week we will be looking at growth over time focussing on the changes from birth to adulthood. We will be sequencing pictures and discussing all the things that we can do now which we couldn't when we were babies.

In phonics we will be learning to recognise,hear and say the phonemes g,o,c,k and practising sounding out and blending the phonemes that we know into words. We use the "Phonics Play" website game "Buried Treasure" to help us practice this key skill. (www.phonicsplay.co.uk)

In mathematics we will be ordering numbers 0-10 and creating shape people. 

We will also be having lots of fun in ICT listening to our voice recordings from last week and playing a "Guess Who's speaking?" game matching our photos to the voice recordings.
In P.E we will be playing games with the beanbags and experimenting with different ways of moving.

Week Beginning 15th September
 
This week we are beginning our "Special Memories" topic by focusing on birthdays.  We will be reading lots of books around this theme but our main story is "Kipper's Birthday" by Mike Inkpen.

In phonics we will be learning to recognise, hear and say the phonemes i,n,m and d and how to sound out and blend the phonemes that we know in words for example p-i-n,
m-a-t etc. We use the "Phonics play" website game "Buried Treasure" to help us in our practice of this key skill. (www.phonicsplay.co.uk)  

In maths we will be playing number correspondence games and learning new mathematical language. We are also going to work on our shape recognition by looking at presents and creating paper chains with repeated patterns.
We'll also be having lots of fun making voice recordings on the laptops and moving in different ways in P.E.

 

Week Beginning 8th September

This week we will be making faces using Atelier and discussing body parts and what they are used for.

We will be talking through a story which uses mathematical language (take away, less, equals) and practising our counting and number correspondence.

We will also be having our very first P.E lesson where we will be getting changed into our kits!!!

In our phonics sessions we will be learning to recognise the letters S,A,T and P and will be finding objects that begin with these letter sounds e.g. S for spider, socks and sand. We will also be practising oral blending e.g. c-a-t is cat.
