A look back at Autumn Term 2

English- The Polar Express

One of our novel studies this half term was ‘The Polar Express’ by Chris Van Allsburg. To launch the book, the children had to look for clues and discuss what they thought they might tell us. They were all fabulous detectives and lots of children guessed correctly. Year 1 focused on descriptive writing about the journey to the North Pole while Year 2 have been writing persuasive letters to Santa.

Science- Seasonal Changes

This half term we have been learning about the four seasons, how weather differs in each season and how the length of the day changes throughout the year. We started our learning with a walk around school to see if we could spot signs of seasonal change. Throughout the half term we have been recording the weather, temperature and rainfall. We then discussed the data we had collected and thought about what it tells us about seasonal change.

Art- Andy Goldsworthy Collages

In art we have been finding out about the land artist Andy Goldsworthy. Having looked at many pieces of his artwork, we discovered that he creates beautiful sculptures out of natural objects such as leaves, mug, twigs, ice and stones. The children explored natural materials around the school grounds so they could plan and create their own sculptures and patterns. The children then worked together to create their designs in the style of Andy Goldsworthy’s art. After their artwork was complete they evaluated the process and thought about how they could improve their designs.

Geography- The World

After learning about the countries of the United Kingdom last half term, we followed this learning by finding out about the wider world. So far we have learnt the names of the five oceans and the seven continents.

Christmas Performance/ RE

We have spent the whole half term practicing for our Nativity and all the children’s effort clearly paid off. Both performances were wonderful and we were all very proud of everyone! Throughout the half term we have been learning about the story of Christmas and the traditions that make this a very special time of year for many. The children retold the Christmas story using puppets and thought about their own family traditions.
