A look back at spring 1
We have had a fantastic half term. It began with an eruption of activities related to volcanoes. We drew and made models of volcanoes and explored ‘Escape from Pompeii’ by Christina Ballit in English.
We also researched volcanoes and made fact-files about them in English, exploring extreme weather through our geography question – What makes the Earth angry? In science to answer the question ‘What do rocks tell us about the way the Earth was formed?’ we conducted observations and experiments of rocks and soils to support our learning.
We have really enjoyed the story 'The Spiderwick Chronicles' by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi. We have written character and setting descriptions and planned and written our own fantasy stories, set in another world with make-believe characters.
In reading we used our ERIC skills - explain, retrieval, inference and (author) choice to answer questions related to our novels or based on our science and geography learning such as The Water Cycle and volcanoes.
In maths we finished exploring fractions and then moved onto time using our maths mastery approach.
We have enjoyed our spelling sessions; breaking words into sounds and syllables to help us spell them (and remember the tricky bits!) and identifying rules and patterns.
In grammar we explored expanded noun phrases, adverbial phrases and speech.
In RE we discussed miracles through the questions - Could Jesus really heal people? Were these miracles or is there some other explanation?
In computing we used iPads to programme a turtle using algorithms. We also took part in Safer Internet Day and learnt how to keep safe online by keeping our information private and being careful with permissions.
In music we really enjoyed our learning through the rap song: Stop! (a song about bullying).
In French we learnt how to make statements about travel, describe the weather and say the names of the week in our topic ‘On y va’.
We discussed ‘Dreams and Goals’ in PSHCE.
A great half term - well done Snowy Owls
