This term we continued our mini-beast topic and we now have a fantastic bug hotel in our outside area where we can observe mini-beasts. Over thee may half term our caterpillars changed into butterflies and we watched them being released. We have learnt lots of facts about bees, worms and snails and we presented our learning in our topic book, sometimes using the powerpoint programme. We have been able to sort mini-beasts by their characteristics and create our own mini-beast riddles following careful observations. We loved learning about how bees make honey by collecting nectar and pollen from the flowers. We painted some lovely mini-beast paintings for the Crowle Show this summer and we also really enjoyed singing 'The Ugly Bug Ball' at our summer family picnic with actions.
This term we visited the Tropical Butterfly House and we handled lots of different mini-beasts including a giant snail, a cockroach and a stick insect. We loved seeing the butterflies and the and the ants working in the tropical house.
This half term we watched our bean plants grow and closely observed the roots, stems and leaves growing. We labelled the parts of a plant and can talk confidently about how a plant grows and how we need to care for them.
In maths we did lots of ordering and counting forwards and backwards from 0-20 and counting to 100! We have been practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, and saying the number that is one more and one less than numbers up to 20. We have been learning to read and understand number sentences and how to complete and write these to show what we have been doing in maths with addition, subtraction and doubling. We challenged ourselves to add and subtract using numberlines and continued to practise this using practical resources. We have been naming and ordering coins up to £2 and making values of coins using other coins. We have been finding pairs of numbers that total 5,6 and 10. Over the half term we have also been exploring measures and we have really enjoyed having the water tray outside in the sunshine!
We have read a range of fiction, non-fiction and poems about mini-beasts and growing including Superworm, The Snail and the Whale and Bumblebear. We have been writing mini-beast facts and instructions for growing beans. This half term our focus has been on composing sentences about a theme, using punctuation correctly and presenting our writing neatly on the line. We have been learning that stories have a beginning, middle and an end and have been writing our own stories about mini-beasts. We have enjoyed reading our stories to our friends.
We also enjoyed a visit from the Imagination Library Team and we took part in an interactive story-telling session of The Little Red Train. We then explored lots of book related activities in the hall. We had a fantastic time and we hope you enjoy looking at some of the photographs.
Phonics (reading and writing)
In phonics we continued learning to read and write simple sentences; including reading and writing 2-syllable words and words with adjacent consonants.
We have been learning to read and spell tricky words and can use these in our writing.
In PE we enjoyed creating and performing a mini-beast dance - our butterflies were very graceful and our worms were very wiggly! We practised running on the track and completing an obstacle race. Sports day was enjoyable and everyone tried their best. We have also been learning how to roll, catch and throw accurately using quoits, beanbags and different sized balls. We also enjoyed our visit from Splat's circus and we practised circus skills such as balancing peacock feathers and spinning plates!
In autumn we will be in our new key stage one class and we enjoyed spending time with our new teachers this half term. In PSHE we have also been discussing changes and our move into year one.
WE HAVE HAD AN AMAZING YEAR IN RECEPTION AND WE HOPE YOU HAVE ENJOYED SHARING OUR LEARNING JOURNEY WITH US.
