Welcome to Little Owls Reception Class
In the first few weeks we will be settling in, meeting and making new friends and learning the rules and routines in Little Owls Reception class. The children will be introduced to our Foundation Unit Gold Standard and will learn how to be Learning Superheroes.
We will then move onto our topic work - Ourselves. The children will explore the topic in different ways based on what they already know and what they would like to find out. We will explore the topic through stories such as TITCH, Elmer, Our House, Dogger and The Three Little Pigs and we will be doing activities and crafts based on these stories. Throughout our topic work we will develop our communication skills - listening to others and explaining our own knowledge and ideas, asking questions and using new words from the topic.
In maths we will practice rote counting to 20, touch counting and corresponding objects to numbers. Children will also explore simple, practical addition. Our space, shape and measures work will focus on naming and describing 2d shapes and making shape pictures. We will also be describing, following and creating simple patterns and comparing. The children will be learning the days of the week and be encouraged to use everyday language related to time such as ‘yesterday’, ‘this morning’ and ‘tomorrow’. The children will also explore language of position such as ʻinʼ, ʻonʼ, ʻoverʼ, ʻunderʼ, ʻbesideʼ, ʻleftʻ and ʻrightʼ in games and activities. Through our topic work we will be ordering and measuring different lengths and heights e.g. our feet and finding out who is the tallest.
Phonics (reading and writing)
In phonics the children will be learning to recognise hear and say the following phonemes using songs and actions:
Set 1: s, a, t, p
Set 2: i, n, m, d
Set 3: g, o, c, k
Set 4: ck, e, u, r
Set 5: h, b, f, ff, l, ll, ss
Children will be encouraged to use letter sounds to blend and segment words for reading and writing e.g. they will blend the sounds c-a-t to make cat and to find letters that make up the word pin, p-i-n.
We will also be learning to read the following tricky words:
The, to, I, no, go, into.
In PE our focus will be getting changed independently, learning the safety rules and routines, exploring different movements and balances through listening games and activities. We will also be learning about the importance of exercise and this will be supported by our topic work.
The children will also be completing sessions entitled ‘Being me…’ in PSHE which further supports our topic work.
