We will begin this half term with a Halloween themed week. We will be making potions, writing spells and doing Halloween baking and craft activities. We will also be discussing bonfire night and how to keep ourselves safe and making firework pictures.
People Who Help Us
We will then move onto our topic work - People who help us. The children will explore the topic in different ways based on what they already know and what they would like to find out. We will invite different people who help us from the community to come and talk to the children and answer their questions to help move their learning forward. We will begin by looking at the Fire Brigade leading on from our bonfire night work. Throughout our topic work we will develop our communication skills - listening to others and explaining our own knowledge and ideas, asking questions and using new words from the topic.
In maths we will be rote counting to numbers higher than twenty and counting back from twenty. We will practise matching quantities and numbers, ordering numbers and saying which number is one more and one less from a given number (e.g. one less than six is 5 and one more than six is seven) and writing the corresponding addition and subtraction number sentences (6-1=5, 6+1=7). We will also focus on writing numbers. Our space, shape and measures work will focus on naming and describing shapes, using language related to time and money. They will also be exploring and comparing length, height and capacity.
Phonics (reading and writing)
In phonics we will be moving into phase 3 learning new letter sounds:
Set 6: j, v, w, x
Set 7: y, z, zz, qu

This work will be applied through reading and writing simple captions and sentences.
In PE our focus will be moving with confidence - under, over and around apparatus and using the climbing and balancing equipment. We will be exploring jumping off and object, landing safely. We will also be learning about the importance of exercise and this will be supported by our topic work.
Towards the end of the term our focus will shift to the Christmas celebration, we will be busy learning songs and dances, making Christmas crafts and Christmas lists and sharing stories of this tradition from our own homes and families. We will also begin to look at the Winter season.
