Spring 1 learning


This half term, in English, we will begin with the short story 'Escape from Pompeii' by Christina Ballit. This text links to our Geography topic learning - 'What makes the Earth angry?' in which we will be exploring volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis and our science question  - What do rocks tell us about the way the Earth was formed? We will be making our own exploding volcanoes and writing a report about volcanoes.


Our novel study for the remainder of Spring Term will be  'The Spiderwick Chronicles' by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi.


We will be writing character descriptions and adventure and fantasy stories amongst other writing activities based on the book and answering questions about the text in reading using our ERIC skills - explain, retrieval, inference and (author) choice . We will also be exploring texts in reading to support our geography and science learning.


In maths we will be continuing to explore length and perimeter followed by units on multiplication and division, time and fractions through the maths mastery approach.


In spelling we will be using the sounds and syllables approach to learn how to spell words and about spelling patterns.


In grammar we will be revising word classes and exploring noun phrases, adverbial phrases and speech.


In RE we will be discussing miracles through the questions - Could Jesus really heal people? Were these miracles or is there some other explanation? 


In computing we will using laptops and tablets to write a computer programme and learning how to keep safe online.


In music our learning is focused around one song: Stop! - a rap/song about bullying. We will learn about the interrelated dimensions of music through games, singing and composing.


In French we will be learning how to make statements about travel, describe the weather and say the names of the week in our topic

‘On y va’.


In PE our topic are performance dance and invasion games. In dance we will be working cooperatively to create, adapt and perform a dance sequence with precision and flair. In invasion games we will be learning evasion, shooting, attacking and defending skills through a game.


Our PSHCE topic is focused on 'Dreams and Goals' and our British value focus this half term is 'Individual Liberty'.
