Spring Term 1 learning





Spring Term 


We will be continuing to learn the phase three letter sounds and digraphs, practicing blending, segmenting and letter formation.

We will be having regular observation, listening and discussion session based around a theme. E.g. winter, Artic animals, Antarctic animals and farm animals and crops

Through stories and the sharing of information books we will begin to answer inference, explain and retrieval questions. We will learn to read and begin to spell phase two and three tricky words.


Number Recognition/counting

In this unit the children will develop their knowledge of the number system and master recognising and ordering numbers to twenty. We will be able to recognise one more and one less than a given number to twenty. We will continue to add and subtract numbers within ten using the part, part, whole model.

Shape, Space and Measures

In this unit the children will develop there understanding of 2D and 3D shape, naming, describing and sorting the properties of shapes. 

Children will be able to sequence time and tell o'clock times.

Knowledge and understanding of the world

In this unit we will look at how winter affects our immediate environment and the way that we behave. We will also be looking at how animals in cold environments adapt to their surroundings. We will explore some of the animals that live in the Artic and Antarctic. 

Then we will focus on local farming looking at the names of male and female farm animals along with the names of their young. We will also look at how crop production and farming contributes to our food supply. 

Self Confidence and self-awareness

The children will be encouraged to talk about the things that they are good at. They will be supported to verbally express their needs, wants, interests and opinions.

Children will be taught about how to be resilient and that achievements often take a lot of effort. the children will be taught how to feel proud of their acomplishments and how to celebrate their own and the classes achievements. 

Managing Feelings and behaviour

.Children will be taught strategies to resolve conflict in play with others and when working as part of a group.

Children will be taught to take turns and share failrly. 

the children will be encouraged to resolve minor conflicts independently.

Making Relationships

Children will be taught to play as part of a group making suggestions about what to play and where to play. 

The children will be taught that everyone is different and unique and how our different personalities can compliment each other. 

Moving and Handling

Gross Motor Control- Jumping Jacks

In this unit the children will learn how to do a variety of jumps safely both on the floor and off the apparatus. They will then be taught to sequence a number of jumps together and perform these to the rest of the group.


Fine Motor Control

The children will participate in daily activities to improve their fine motor control and ensure they develop an effective pencil grip. These activities include ; threading, playdough activities, scissor control, colouring, using tweezers amongst lots of other activities. There will be a large focus on letter formation this term.


Health and self-care

Children will have a greater understanding of how excersise improved their fitness by strengthening their muscles. 


Expressive Arts and Design

The children will learn a repertoire of new songs related to their learning’ They will also learn about pitch- high and low sounds.

Children will be provided with stimulus and resources to explore different media e.g chalks, paints, workshop materials, atelier resources amongst other resources. Children will be taught how to use tools in order to be able to add simple detail.



Children will be taught to use ICT with help to document  experiences such as taking a photograph of a visit and writing a caption or making a video to document an event.

Children will be taught to use a simple age appropriate programme.
