Reading, writing and grammar skills will be taught through this novel study. At the end of the unit, children will write their own narrative based on the novel.

Mathematics Y6

Fractions

Pupils deepen their understanding of fractions, building on their knowledge of different representations to focus more on the numerical patterns and relationships. Equivalence is seen from the perspective of ‘same value, different appearances and pupils embed a deep understanding of the relationships between the values in equivalent fractions. This understanding underpins simplifying, comparing and addition and subtraction of fractions.

Missing angles and length

Year 6 pupils will consolidate their understanding of angles using degrees to measure and draw a range of angles. They apply this understanding to find and calculate missing angles within diagrams and 2-D shapes. Year 6 pupils consolidate their understanding of properties of shapes, comparing and classifying 2-D shapes.

Co-ordinates and shape

Year 6 pupils develop their understanding of coordinates in all four quadrants, including developing skills using negative numbers, using this understanding to draw, translate and reflect shapes on a coordinate grid. They use this knowledge to find missing coordinates in a range of 2-D shapes in problems both with and without gridlines. They consolidate and deepen their understanding of 3-D shape through exploring nets, and they define the parts of a circle before applying this to solve problems.
