English Novel Study

The Explorer by Katherine Rundell

Reading, writing and grammar skills will be taught through this novel study. At the end of the unit, children will write their own narrative based on the novel.

Mathematics Y6

Fractions

In this unit, pupils build on their conceptual understanding of calculating with fractions, focusing on multiplication (of two proper fractions) and division (of a common fraction by an integer).

Decimals and Measures

Year 6 pupils explore measures, including application of their understanding of decimal numbers up to 3 decimal places. They convert metric measures of length, mass and capacity and investigate imperial measures. They apply this understanding when calculating the area and perimeter of rectilinear figures and the area of parallelograms and triangles and the volume of cubes and cuboids. They solve problems relating to time including converting between units of time.

Percentages and Statistics

Year 6 pupils consolidate percentages before applying this to a range of problems including calculating percentages of amounts and comparison of percentages including percentage decrease. Pupils then develop their understanding of statistics. They learn about the mean as an average and calculate the mean in different contexts. Pupils interpret and draw line graphs, including time graphs, calculating the mean of a set of data where appropriate. They learn how to interpret pie charts and compare data presented in more than one pie chart and understand how to construct pie charts.

Mathematics Y5

Fractions and Percentages

In this unit pupils calculate with fractions starting with addition and subtraction and moving on to multiplying a fraction and a whole number. Pupils are introduced to percentage for the first time and come to understand that percentages, decimals and fractions are different ways of expressing proportions.

Transformations

In this unit pupils will review using coordinates to describe positions on a 2-D grid. Pupils identify, describe and represent the position of a shape following a translation or a reflection and known that the shape has not changed.

Science

How can you light up your life?

Recognise that light appears to travel in straight lines •use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain that objects are seen because they give out or reflect light into the eye •explain that we see things because light travels from light sources to our eyes or from light sources to objects and then to our eyes •use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain why shadows have the same shape as the objects that cast them.
